Everyone's favorite psycho was on the
mound last night. Mad Max Scherzer. This
breakdown is brought to you by
DraftKings. It is bottom of the fifth
inning. There's one runner on. There's
one out. He's got a lefty up that he's
got to pitch to with a nice green tape
job on the bat handle. And then he's got
Randy, the greatest ever, a Rosarena on
deck. That's the situation. First pitch,
he goes fast ball to the lefty. Then
he's going to work the change up. Gets
it for a strike. Looking. That one falls
below the zone. Now the 2-1 is a fast
ball on the outside. 3-1. Another fast
ball. It's hit pretty hard. He fell
behind in the count. The catch is made.
There's two outs. But manager probably
saw that and was like, "Ah, maybe it's
time. Let me go check on him." Sherzer
gets surprised. Whoa,
hold on. Not what I want to be seeing.
My manager coming. Manager like, "Are
you good?" He says, "Yeah, I'm good.
Yeah, let's go." And then stares at him.
Never breaks eye contact. Just stares at
him with his different colored eyes and
says, "Get off my mound. I've got work
to do." Schneider says, "All right,
cool. All good with me. Go get him."
Randy Rosarena is up and before I show
you this at bat, Schneider looking on
thinking, "Okay, here we go. Is this
okay?" Before I show you this at bat, I
think it's important to know the
previous at bats. He opened him up with
a fast ball, got him swinging for a
strike, and then with one strike went to
the breaking ball and got a ground out.
That was the first at bat. The next
atbat, he opens him up fast ball again.
Randy took it, then went slider again.
Randy got pretty good wood on it, but
it's caught in the outfield. He was
getting first pitch with the fast ball,
then second pitch with a slider to a lot
of the righties in this game. So Randy
has decided, I think I'm going to do
what I did the second. I'm not going to
swing at the fast ball. I'm sitting on
the slider. First fast ball's yanked to
the outside. Ball one. Then he takes a
fast ball. So now he's got his first
strike with the fast ball and Randy
says, "Okay, I know that you're going to
come with a slider. I'm going to sit on
that." He freezes him with a fast ball.
Sherzer changed the sequence. He got
strike two with a fast ball right down
the middle. And now you're in his
pocket. He's in your brain. He's dancing
cuz Ry's got to respect the fast ball
now. He can't just take another one.
He's like, "All right, I got to respect
the fast ball. He's going to try and get
me out the fast balls now." One, two
pitch. There's the slider. Gets the big
chase. He's fired up. Take me out of the
game. I had Randy set up. Three innings
in the work. Look at those two pitches.
The overlay is nuts. They're the same
pitch and then they're suddenly not the
same pitch. But you got to get him off
the scent to then sneak it by him. He
walks off the mound. He's going to yell
at his manager. Let's go. And I'm not
done. I'm going back out. I'm the
manager now. Pitching coach loves it.
Had a baby. You know who else loved it?
His teammates. Look at Springer and
Jimenez. No.
Godamn. They loved it. No, I'm not
coming out. Even Rosenthal, the scouting
report that Schneider, middle of the
inning, walked past him and said,
>> Schneider walked by and said, "I've been
waiting for that all year." They send
him back out for the bottom of the six.
And then you say, "Let's go get us some
more outs." You got four runs to work
with. It'd be nice if we can hand this
ball and use less of the bullpen. But
it's Cal who's up first. I think that
was a change up first pitch foul. And
then he's going to go stay uh away from
the fast ball. A slider up. That's out
number one. He's feeling great. Let me
start grooving. Another guy with
stunning eyes in a different way. First
pitch slider. He takes it. Changing up
the sequences. Then fast ball for strike
two. Then 02 after being up and in. Low
and away. He's going to make him swing.
That's a nice quick sequence. Julio's
thinking, "Okay, that sucked." She's
bored. Boring. Okay. All right. I like
it. Look at these two pitches. They're
in the same spot, but they're different
pitches at different speeds. He was
working up and in the first two, and
then off of that, he says, "Now I'll get
you a chase." You got to respect the
fast ball, and that way I disrespect you
with the slider. Let's go. It's a lefty
up. First pitch, fast ball up. Fouls it
back. Curveball off of that. Two
pitches, two swings. Let's go. Let's
finish this off. Rosin and Sweat. It's
Rosin and Sweat. Slider in, fouled off.
Then they're going to go fast ball away.
The target is up and away. He yanks it.
It's low. Then Slider again. That's
inside. Now it's a two- two count.
Change up below the zone. Let's go. Come
on. Let's go. Oh, change up away. Makes
a great pitch. Stays alive. And then
fast ball to freeze him. No. Walks him.
Not great. All right. Now he's coming
out. See, when if you don't watch
baseball a lot, as soon as the manager
does this, it means it's done. It's
official. you can't do anything about
it. So, he signals early. I'm not even
giving Sherzer the chance to plead his
case. Sherzer sees that. He's like, "Oh,
god damn it. All right, fine. I guess
that's the case. Here you go. Here's the
ball." But I was right about last
inning. I sure was. The fans in Seattle
from Toronto love it. The dugout loves
it. He gets high fives. Great outing
from Sherzer in a pretty big game. And
then he's talking to himself in the
dugout. I was trying to go up. Yeah, we
saw it right here. He's trying to go up.
Trying to go up and in. Tried to go up a
couple times and couldn't get it, which
sometimes a sign of fatigue, just
missing spots. So, that's it. Mad Max.
Got to love him. Look at that guy. This
breakdown was brought to you by
DraftKings. Thank you very much to
DraftKings for sponsoring. And thank you
very much to you guys for watching.
