Victoria Beckham talks about the challenges she has faced in the fashion industry in the new docuseries “Victoria Beckham.”
That was a clip from the docu-series Victoria Beckham.
It is so good.
It takes us into the launch of your fashion line,
how you became a true fashion designer,
how you won over the naysayers and the critics,
and then this absolutely anxiety-inducing fashion
show in Paris, which is the penultimate of launching
really, really cementing your status as a fashion designer.
Take us through what you needed to do
to be taken seriously in the fashion industry
and not just be a celebrity designer.
You know, I've been in the fashion industry
for nearly two decades, so for nearly 20 years.
And I was in the Spice Girls, a time
that I'm so, so proud of and so thankful for.
But that was for a four-year period in my life.
And I've been so defined by that four-year period
that it really was, for nearly two decades,
me keeping my head down, focusing on the product,
making sure that I don't put anything out there,
whether it's a simple piece of clothing or an eyeliner,
until I truly believe it is the best in class,
and fighting those preconceptions for nearly two decades.
You know, so it's taken a while.
And it's a tough, tough business, the fashion business.
And there was a period in the documentary
you talk about where the business almost went under.
How did you handle that?
It was really difficult.
And I've been really, really honest about that
in the documentary, because it was difficult at the time,
because the business was struggling like crazy.
But we were getting credibility and getting
rave reviews for the creativity.
And it was spiraling out of control.
And I think it's not been since I began the process
of this documentary that I've ever really looked back,
really had time to reflect and look at my journey so far.
You know, I'm always looking forward.
I'm ambitious.
I'm dreaming big.
But it's been a therapeutic experience.
What's interesting is how, you know,
I hear David describing, he knows you so well
that he knows that you are-
But you look so calm.
You are the epitome of calm.
I wish I could flip out the way you flip out.
I've never seen such a calm demeanor
with so much going on and in certain moments going wrong.
What is it that keeps you able to be unflappable,
at least on the outside, unflappably presenting?
You know, I internalize a lot.
Well, I say I went into the documentary process
a control freak.
I've come out the other side, a reformed control freak.
Right, right.
And there are certain things that are just
out of your control, whether it's out of your control.
And I just like to be positive all the time.
That's how I choose to lead my team as well, being positive.
Yeah, it shows.
What are you gonna do if it's gonna rain, Kelly?
It shows.
It looks like, really, you have got a great team of people
that are so loyal to you.
I have, I have, I have.
If you, I mean, it is, I'm just gonna say the words,
it's fashion porn.
It really is.
Every outfit, every look, I just,
I can't wait to watch it again,
because I loved it so much.
It's Victoria Beckham, streaming on Netflix now.
Victoria Beckham, everybody.
