It's Embarrassing! NASA Slams Starship HLS Issue Delaying Artemis while SLS...
NASA's concerns about the progress of Starship HLS in particular and NASA's Artemis 3 in general are not new. However, this national space agency has recently raised the alarm, and this time, it looks more serious.
The NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, also known as NASA Asap, has expressed a rather pessimistic outlook, suggesting that the plan to return humans to the Moon in 2027 could be delayed by several years due to challenges with SpaceX’s Starship HLS.
So, what do the space community think about this matter?
Does SpaceX continue to win the trust of the space enthusiasts?
Find out the answer in today’s Techmap episode!

If you’re just catching up with what’s happening on the Moon, NASA is planning to build something called Artemis Base Camp at the lunar South Pole. The idea is for astronauts to live and work there for extended periods, carrying out science, research, and technology development. One of the most crucial parts of this mission is, of course, landing on the Moon. We need a new lander—definitely not the one from the 1960s. The lander currently in development is a specialized version of SpaceX’s Starship, known as HLS, or Human Landing System. Recently, NASA visited SpaceX to check in on HLS—since they’re the ones funding it—and unfortunately concluded that the project is likely years behind schedule. This delay poses a serious risk of the US falling behind China and Russia in the race to the Moon. So, what’s causing the holdup?

One of the biggest challenges is that the rocket is simply too large to carry all the propellant it needs to reach the Moon. To make it work, SpaceX will likely need to launch dozens of additional Starship vehicles filled with propellant to refuel the Starship HLS on its journey. The complication is that orbital refueling is an extremely complex task, especially when dealing with cryogenically cooled propellant. NASA has noted that progress has slowed because SpaceX is juggling priorities with the development of its standard Starship program.
