This piece had all the makings of a disaster—sand spots, deep Potch lines, and unpredictable color bars. I bought this black opal knobby for $6,800, not knowing if I’d walk away with a $5 dud… or a $10,000+ gem.
From the very first grind, things started looking rough—literally. Sand threatened the face, color shifted unexpectedly, and the pressure was on. But as I kept slicing, shaping, and trusting my gut, the impossible began to unfold…
In the end, the gamble paid off: an 18.15 carat black opal, valued at around $14,400.
