The Sweden Democrats demand a referendum on the planned constitutional amendment
The party argues that the proposal risks freezing the political system and
giving the Social Democrats the initiative and right to shape future reforms
Now the other parties have voted for this in a first vote
And now it will rest on the vote and then it will be tested in the
vote And then a new majority can vote for this again
But a referendum can be requested in the Riksdag
And now we have requested it and we hope for an additional 45 wise members in the Riksdag
Someone then needs to confirm it for it to become a vote
The change that has already been approved in a first parliamentary vote
It means that from now on a two-thirds majority will be
required at the second decision to amend the constitution
Today a simple majority is enough
But there are several things that have been discussed
for example within the scope of this constitutional review
The question of whether citizenship should be able to be passed on from naturalized citizens
Someone who commits serious crimes
There is a majority for today in the chamber
but as far as I know there is no qualified majority
This means that the Social Democrats can block such a
proposal if this constitutional amendment passes now
Is this really about strengthening democracy
I don't think so because then you're giving big parties too much power
Opportunity to block necessary changes
And I find it very hard to understand in what way it strengthens democracy
It's rather how it's done in semi-democracies and authoritarian states
Using the basic laws to lock down the current system
This is what Orban has done in Hungary
He is often blamed for it anyway
So I find it very hard to understand how it strengthens democracy
The party now hopes to gain sufficient support
in the Riksdag for the issue to go to a referendum
I understand if the Moderates become a bit supportive of this
I have full respect for that
I think it's necessary Because they have already
agreed to this and I don't understand why
That's giving the Social Democrats sense and justice
over the foundation for an understandable future
The title of this proposal is to strengthen the protection of democracy
I don't think it's being done to weaken these
And locks democracy instead
And why would it be something the Moderates
or the rest of the bourgeoisie think is good
I really have a hard time understanding that
