The parliamentary debate yesterday has been criticized quite a lot What do you think about the tone and the debate itself
I have always been very critical I have been part of those debates for 15 years
I think it hasn't gotten any better quite the opposite
People are trying even more bizarre elements now We are supposed to have duels and it's supposed to be button presses
Oh it's the moderators who should lead the discussion based on the script they have written in the editorial room
Instead of letting us just talk I think that's problematic in itself
We have eight party leaders as well We will discuss four topics during a two-hour debate
With all these side comments you don't get many minutes of speaking time
Well things are getting heated Everyone wants to be seen and heard
One must present one's arguments prepared before the ministers
It's not as if anyone becomes wiser from those debates
I think public service needs to take a more effective approach to that
I often mention the 1991 final debate as an example It's really gray boring and dreary
It's on YouTube for those who want to watch it
But that's public service Actually going to the depth
Everyone has a specific speaking time that they can use as they wish
One can meet the people one wants to meet and speak from one's own heart
From this point on it's quite boring to watch
But sometimes it has to be a bit boring too
There are many private media companies that could fuel this type of heated debates
They have it today instead It's not the public service job
Many people are calling for a more factual debate How important is that and how can one achieve it
TV4 has tried to divide us
So we're four and four in the morning news with coffee cups and snacks and we're making a little food
It's not a debate it's called a conversation
I was very skeptical about it at first
When I saw it for the first time a few years ago I thought it was incredibly boring to watch
They said it hit me that maybe that's what's missing
Just think we might need a more substantive political conversation rather than these debates
It becomes almost like a kind of sports event More of a show than an actual conversation
They at least have an ambition to do something else I think that's positive
It should be a public service that takes on this kind of initiative I think
