Hi everyone, my name is Willow Allen and I'm an Inuk in the Arctic and we are getting ready
to go out to my cabin on Husky Lakes. It is halfway between Inuvik, the community where I'm in,
and the Arctic Ocean and so I'm going to show you guys everything that we do to get ready
and pack to go. So my brother Winter, he went out and got this load of wood yesterday.
Our cabin is located past the tree line so it's so far up in the Arctic that trees can't grow
anymore because it's too cold but in Inuvik we're actually still in the tree line. So usually what
we do is we get wood to take out there. Wood is the only thing that we use to heat the cabin,
cook food, and boil water. So we're going to shovel out the back of this truck because we're
going to put all the wood in the back here. We're driving two trucks down the Inuvik-Tuck highway
and halfway between Inuvik and Tuck is where we'll go off the road by skidoo to our cabin.
And so this truck has tail skidoo in the box and then we'll get a trailer to pull
these other two skidoos. So we got all the wood loaded that we'll need for about four days
and then right here we also have the auger to drill holes for fishing. When we get out there
too we'll also have to split it all with an axe. Okay now we'll go inside and we'll pack up the
stuff that is inside. Oh yeah. We have to run to Northern to get some last minute groceries
to pack for our trip and we're gonna pick up my two little cousins because they wanted to come
and I think we're gonna tell them that they can come with us to the cabin so I think they'll be
really excited about that. Also it is currently April 18th and it is minus five but minus 17
with a wind chill and the snow has kind of started to melt but not fully.
You got it! You got a buckle.
You can't. You're not allowed. We'll go to jail. You don't want to go to jail.
Oh she's coming? She's coming to say hi.
Yeah. I hope that wind died. It's about coming out. I know. I think it's supposed to die down
after six. Yeah. To Northern right now. I want to go really fast. Okay. Oh we were going to ask if
you guys wanted to come to Husky Lakes today. Yeah. Yeah. It's by Skidoo. We go by. Yeah.
You want to go by Skidoo? Have you ever been to Husky Lakes? No. So we're about to go to
Northern. We just ran into Winter and Caitlin. Okay we'll have to get a cart.
Okay I don't know if you can fit in the cart. Marley you're too big.
Husky gets a mango. Do you like mango? Yeah. Have you tried it before? Yeah. Okay.
Cauliflower. I guess you can have the cauliflower if that's what you want.
Yeah. Yeah I did. I don't know if you can hold them all.
They're made in the Northwest Territories. I think they make them in
Canada. Let's get a big pack. Marley be careful. It's really cold and icy. My mom and I are packing
up all the food that we need out there. So this is about three days worth of food that we'll pack
in these grub boxes. And these three days worth of food costed around $500. And so we're going to
be spending Easter dinner out there. So a lot of that stuff is for that as well. And so this is how
we're packing up the eggs so they don't break. It's folding them up in a towel. And in the bottom
is a towel and I always put cardboard in case something leaks and it gives a little bit more
bounce to it. I take UHT milk usually because it doesn't go sour so easy.
You helping? Thanks. Thanks for helping.
I think it'll be okay. We don't have that far to go so.
Watch your hands sweetie. Oh the cream of wheat. We can't leave her cream of wheat.
Now this is the food and the water that we have to load up into the truck.
He put a popcorn out that's cat door. I don't know. Okay so now we have to load up the three
skidoos and the sled. What are you doing? There's Oscar. Oscar come back. Good. Oh now Oscar.
They're loading up the sled. We're gonna go to Husky Lakes.
Oh as soon as everything's loaded. You want to.
Yeah Oscar is.
We'll fill them. Yes. He wants the other bun bun. We're all packed up now and we're on our way
to the cabin. We'll drive down the Anubic Tuck Highway and then halfway to Tuck we will get out
with the skidoos and we will drive the rest of the way by skidoo. Thanks for following along.
