SALEKHARD
Discover Nenets nomadic life in Arctic Russia, where temperatures drop to nearly -40°C and everyday routines take on a different meaning. Inside a traditional chum, a Nenets family begins the morning with frozen raw reindeer meat, while deep snow and extreme cold shape life beyond their home.

Morning sunlight enters through a small window as the family gathers for breakfast. Outside, a woman clears snow from the chum, while the grandmother uses an unusual technique to make thread for sewing. Nearby, children play in the snow, wrapped in heavy clothing made from reindeer skins.

Back inside, the family prepares frozen raw fish, carefully removing the skin before eating it with salt. Reindeer meat slowly cooks on the stove, and the grandmother continues working with hides used to make essential winter clothing.

After lunch, we travel by snowmobile deep into a snow-covered forest to collect wooden poles for the chum. The snow is so deep that walking becomes difficult, and even the snowmobiles struggle to move. At temperatures approaching -40°C, cutting trees, removing branches, and transporting heavy logs requires extraordinary effort.

Returning to the warmth of the chum, we share another meal with the family. The grandmother prepares large reindeer hides, while everyday tasks continue around the stove. Even washing clothes requires a different approach in this frozen environment.

As evening arrives, fresh fish is prepared for dinner, clothes are hung to dry inside the chum, and the family settles in for the night. Before going to sleep, we step outside once more to watch the northern lights.

Through shared meals, traditional skills, and the sounds of everyday life, this documentary offers an intimate look at a Nenets family’s home during the extreme Russian winter.
