Yo, yo, the Coal Collective is back on tour
And this time in a country I've dreamt about exploring for a very long time
We've crossed the Italian and Austrian borders to get here
And finally we've made it
Welcome to Slovenia
A country of much diversity and wonder
The big question now was where to start
From the pristine emerald waters of the Soča Valley
Flowing with purity and grace
To the dramatic landscape and towering peaks of the Triglav National Park
Gateway to the wilderness and splendor of the Julian Alps
Just a few hours in this country
And you know that you're somewhere truly exceptional
Steeped in history that runs far deeper than the alpine wonder that we see today
It gives me great pleasure in bringing you Slovenia's highest mountain road
The 2,055 meter high Mangart Saddle
So here we go
We've just passed the Predel Bridge
Which marks the start point of our journey
Well, I say start point
We've got a 17km drag up the valley to get here
And with pitches up to 13 or 14%
It's quite the warm-up
If we're taking a left there
We'll be heading into Italy
As it stands, we're at 1,110 meters
We've got about 10 and a bit Ks
Climbing up to over 2,000 meters
So it's very much all eyes on the Mangart and the road ahead
Started hard
We're gaining altitude quickly
Even gone past a sign there
saying ramps up to 15%
I've seen 12 and a half
See what we've got to come
At 1,260 meters elevation
It looks like we're going to start to head into the forest
About 3 and a half Ks in
Just been through our first tunnel
The gradient's been consistent
At about 8 to 10%
Currently at 1,450 meters elevation
And the forest is thick
Occasionally giving us a glimpse of those big craggy peaks above
Keeping us inspired
Now we've finally broken out of the forest
5 Ks to go
And I've got to say
This is where the mountain really starts to open up
The road's impossibly narrow
And it's narrowed even more
And with that thick forest sheltering us
It's just as well
Because if you're scared of heights
You certainly don't want to look over the edge
This is something quite special
We're at 1,800 meters elevation
And there's barely a sound
So I thought I'd take a moment
And just enjoy the view
Layer upon layer of
Mountain just silhouetting off into the distance
Absolutely spectacular
We've got about 2 and a bit Ks to go
So it's not quite over
I'm just going to use this
Moment for a last bit of inspiration
Before the final push to the top
We're into the last kilometer
Gradient's kicked up just a little bit
Up to 8 or 9%
So quite the finale
But we've got the whole mountain to ourselves
Quite the way to finish
It's got the hallmarks of a lacticaptor
Along in the Pyrenees
The narrowness of the road
And just the natural purity of the
The whole mountain range
That's what we love about it
But Mangert being Mangert
It's still got its character of its own
And I tell you what
It's quite unique
One of the greatest climbs I think I've done
First time to Slovenia
And it does not disappoint
We made it
2055m
I'm so happy to be up here
Let's check out these views
There's the Mangert
The great peak itself
Barely a sound now
As we enjoy the last
Rays of golden light
So what makes the Mangert so great
Well
I've had quite a bit of time to think about that
It's the type of mountain that
Really helps you put things back in perspective
Switch off, unwind, turn the legs
Remember just the simplicity of riding a bike
That's what we love about it
Until the next time
Peace out
