Despite the recent warm weather, the pumpkin season is thriving in western Massachusetts, with local farms reporting a bountiful harvest.
It's pumpkin season and our resident
pumpkin expert, 22 News Storm Team
meteorologist Adam Strokco, working with
you, working for you and with you with
how the weather we've had this year has
impacted the pumpkin crop.
>> Well, Brian, the good news is that the
weather has been very good for pumpkins
this year.
At Calib Farms in Southwick, they have
plenty of pumpkins for sale and still in
the pumpkin patches to be picked. And
the weather conditions we've had this
year have had an impact on this season's
pumpkin crop.
>> The way the weather was drier throughout
the summer and with the good amount of
heat that we had, it set like for a
really good fall harvest on the pumpkins
this year where there's no issues with
disease like we've had in the past with
all the excessive rain and everything
like we've been getting in the past few
summers. The pumpkins this year are
looking nice and orange and pretty big.
And while we have had some warm weather
this fall, the colder temperatures that
are moving in could pose some problems.
>> If we get down, you know, into the 20s,
you might see a little bit of damage on
some of the pumpkins and stuff like that
that are exposed to where the frost will
sit on them overnight.
>> Joe Calibri says that this year's
pumpkin crop is expected to have a
longer shelf life and should have no
problem making it to Halloween.
And this year, on average, you can
expect to pay around $8 for a pumpkin.
