FOX NEWS: Rep. Ratcliffe Remembers Justice Scalia, Gives Thoughts on Filling Supreme Court Vacancy
We have Texas Congressman John Ratcliffe, a former federal prosecutor who considered
Justice Scalia a legend for conservatives, met him on many occasions.
He's also a congressman who sits on the House Judiciary Committee.
Congressman, thanks for the time.
Your thoughts tonight?
Like everyone, I think it's just a tremendous loss.
Justice Scalia was a brilliant mind.
He was a gifted writer, and most importantly, to me, he was an unwavering conservative.
So, he will certainly go down as one of the most influential and respected justices ever
to serve on the high court, and it will be difficult to replace him.
On most nights, as now is the trend, social media factors in, the top Google trends at
this hour, Justice Scalia died, SCOTUS, and gay marriage, top trending issues.
You know, on that gay marriage case, Justice Scalia wrote one of the most scathing dissents
ever, but largely, a lot of people on the conservative side of the legal issue say
that it was one of the best written.
Boy, it's hard to choose.
So many of his dissents will be remembered as classic.
You know, he had a very plain spoken style, writing style, and it was hard to find fault
in his reasoning or his logic.
Everything was always more to the Constitution, but his dissents were entertaining, they were
often sarcastic, sometimes they were furious, and I think that's what has made him a favorite
of so many conservatives.
And last thing on the process of this, this night also deals with that, the vacancy and
filling it.
Your thoughts as this back and forth has started to develop here in Washington?
Well, I'm not in the Senate, and the House does not confirm judicial appointments, but
you know, the President gets to nominate, but the Senate gets to confirm, and I'm like
everyone, I've heard what Mitch McConnell has said, listen, you know, I don't want to
talk partisan politics tonight, but I mean, I would say that, you know, as someone that
has seen this President as someone who hasn't shown respect for the Constitution or the
rule of law generally, you know, this President is the last person that I would want to see
appointing Justice Scalia's successor, so I, you know, I don't know if people are doing
vote counting already on this, I hope not, I hope we pay respect and tribute to the man
and focus our prayers on his family, and then let the politics come in due course, which
we know it will.
Congressman Radcliffe, thank you for your time.
