In this video I explore the history of a remarkable collection of royal regalia, the crown jewels of Scotland, known as the Honours of Scotland. The crown is the oldest in Britain and among the oldest in Europe and is a work of art of great beauty. The sword and sceptre were gifts from popes, demonstrating the special tie Scotland's kings had with the papacy. Used only four times for coronations, in the early seventeenth century they stopped being used and were nearly destroyed by Oliver Cromwell. In the eighteenth century they were locked away in Edinburgh Castle and thought lost, until rediscovered by Sir Walter Scott. Join me as I explore their fascinating history.
