Hallo, wie geht's?
In this lesson we're going to learn how to say what we like and dislike to eat and drink.
We're going to be answering the question
Was essen und trinken Sie gern?
which means what do you like to eat and drink?
Let's first listen to a short dialogue which has the key phrases we will learn in this lesson.
Was essen und trinken Sie gern?
Ich esse gern Fisch und ich trinke gern Wein.
Ich esse nicht gern Fisch. Ich esse lieber Obst und Gemüse.
Am liebsten esse ich Fleisch. Ich trinke nicht gern Wein.
Was essen und trinken Sie gern?
Ich esse gern Nudeln. Am liebsten trinke ich Wasser.
Let's first take a look at the question.
Was essen und trinken Sie gern?
Was means what.
Sie essen und trinken means you eat and drink.
And we swap over the pronoun and the verbs to make the question.
Gern has the meaning of liking.
So this question means do you like to eat and drink?
Let's go straight into a speaking practice. Listen and repeat.
Great Joe, well done.
Let's now take a look at how to say what you like and don't like to eat.
Ich esse means I eat and gern means liking.
So when we add the two together it means I like to eat.
Conversely we can add nicht between esse and gern to say I don't like to eat.
Fisch means fish.
Here's how we can say what we like and don't like to drink.
So the sentence structure is the same but we have the verb trinke which means to drink
instead of esse.
Wein means wine.
Let's now do a listen and repeat practice of these sentences.
Ich esse gern Fisch.
Ich esse nicht gern Fisch.
Ich trinke gern Wein.
Ich trinke nicht gern Wein.
Great Joe, well done.
Now let's take a look at how you say what you prefer to eat and drink.
Ich esse lieber Obst und Gemüse.
Ich trinke lieber Wein.
Lieber means prefer.
So ich esse lieber means I prefer to eat and ich trinke lieber means I prefer to drink.
Obst is fruit and Gemüse is vegetables.
Let's do a speaking practice of these sentences.
Ich esse lieber Obst und Gemüse.
Ich trinke lieber Wein.
Great Joe, well done.
Let's now take a look at how you say what you most like to eat or drink.
Am liebsten esse ich Fleisch.
Am liebsten trinke ich Wasser.
Am liebsten means most like.
Ich esse is I eat.
So together it means I most like to eat.
Fleisch is meat.
So the first sentence means I most like to eat meat.
And trinke means to drink.
So the second sentence means I most like to drink water.
Let's do a speaking practice of these sentences.
Am liebsten esse ich Fleisch.
Am liebsten trinke ich Wasser.
Excellent job, well done.
Let's listen to the dialogue again.
