Magical Terrarium Illusion 🌿 (Terrascape Inside and Out)

I built this unique terrarium using a 3000 ml square glass jar with a transparent lid, creating the illusion of a single piece of driftwood flowing seamlessly from the inside to the outside of the jar. To achieve this effect, I carefully sawed a piece of driftwood in half, attaching one part inside and the other outside with silicone sealant. To enhance the design, I added detailing wood as creeping vines that extend across both sides of the driftwood, with some even wrapping around the front glass walls for a natural, immersive look.

For the foundation, I laid down a base layer of crushed lava rock for drainage, followed by a nutrient-rich terrarium substrate mix. In the foreground, I used cosmetic sand to create a shoreline effect, adding contrast and depth to the scape. After misting the setup to prepare it for planting, I introduced a variety of terrarium-friendly plants and mosses. These included Selaginella, Bolbitis, Fittonia (red and green varieties), Anubias, and sheet moss. To create even more depth and natural layering, I planted two species of creeping figs: Ficus pumila minima and Ficus quercifolia.

Finally, I introduced a colony of springtails to help prevent mold and maintain a healthy, balanced ecosystem inside the jar. The end result is a striking terrarium where the hardscape and plants visually connect the inside and outside, blurring the boundaries of the glass and creating a living piece of art. I also added a patch of preserved lichen on the driftwood outside to bring a touch of greenery beyond the jar, even if preserved.
