An Ethiopian asylum seeker in Britain was sentenced to 12 months in prison on Tuesday
for sexually assaulting a teenage girl and an adult woman.
His actions sparked protests outside the Bell Hotel, where he and other immigrants were
being housed, leading to a string of country-wide demonstrations over the course of the summer,
amid rising concerns over immigration.
Hidoush Gerbaslasi Kabatu had arrived to Britain illegally from France on a small boat, and
only moved to the Bell Hotel about a week before the sexual assault incident.
Britain's Home Office will seek to deport Kabatu after he is released from jail.
The court's sentencing hearing was told Kabatu also wants to be deported after serving his
time in prison.

open borders.
You have to end it now.
He said every sovereign nation has the right to control its own borders, and to limit the

British government figures show the Home Office is spending $7.8 million per day to house
asylum seekers in hotels, many of whom enter the UK illegally.
Analysis by the Centre for Migration Control found that foreign nationals, including legal
immigrants, were arrested at twice the rate of British-born citizens, though these figures
are far higher for certain nationalities, with Albanians, Afghans, Iraqis, Algerians
and Congolese topping the arrest rate over the first 10 months of 2024.
Foreigners make up 9% of the UK population, but they accounted for 16.1% of the total
number of arrests.
New rules came into force on Tuesday that could see foreign prisoners deported after
serving 30% of their jail terms.
In August, then-Justice Secretary Shibana Mahmood announced plans for further reforms
to deport eligible foreign prisoners immediately.
This law change is included in the sentencing bill currently going through Parliament.
