The Glorious Throne: Restoring the Chair of St. Peter

In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, the Knights of Columbus sponsored a year-long restoration of Bernini’s monumental Chair of St. Peter in the apse of St. Peter’s Basilica. This daring and intricate effort revived the luminous majesty of the towering gilded throne, originally crafted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini under Pope Alexander VII. Enshrined within the masterpiece is a revered relic—an ancient wooden chair long honored as a symbol of apostolic authority.
