How does Sweden Democrats view chat control in the EU
Chat control risks becoming the end of private communication in the EU
It's a step closer to what we see in China An incredibly dangerous proposal
Chat control aims to combat the spread of child pornography
Is there any other more proportional solution to deal with this type of crime
There are several ways to combat child pornography that genuinely respect personal privacy
It avoids the type of mass surveillance that chat control would imply
It may refer to voluntary tools that exist today with some kind of agreement between the EU
and the platforms that offer chat services etc
It is mainly about targeted efforts in contrast to scanning all the material
There are photo-identical ones that you can work with You can work with digital fingerprints
One can for example work on removing sensitive material
There are ways to work with this and we must try them rather than mass surveillance
What would it mean for Swedish citizens and EU citizens in general
if chat control were implemented as the proposal currently stands
Currently there was one person using an app like WhatsApp or Facebook's Messenger service or Signal
It sends its messages with end-to-end encryption
This means no one else can access the material
The approach being proposed by the EU Commission and currently being
negotiated in the ministers' council is known as client-side scanning
It is intended that some kind of spy program will be on every European mobile phone
and scan a message before sending it in this end-to-end encrypted chat
It has been attempted before For example Apple tried to develop client-side scanning
Men man gave up this project after hackers were able to get into it
I think it took a few weeks only
So the technique that the EU wants to test would obviously risk opening
up access for hackers to get into your phone others' phones and my phone
also enable hostile powers to spy on decision-makers
government officials and others in sensitive positions in our society
It contributes to the reason why this proposal can be called dangerous
How would you say the view is on freedom and rights when it comes
to freedom of speech like this one really is and is poking at
I would say that the commitment doesn't seem to be very strong among politicians here in Brussels
On the other hand many people have experienced this and I have not encountered anything similar before as a parliamentarian
Many people have heard from ordinary Swedes who are
worried about what will happen to their personal privacy
Many here are sitting and hoping that new technology in
the future will someday be able to solve a problem they see
They sit and guess and do not take freedom and rights particularly into account
They do not take into account that experts have condemned this proposal as a breac
uman rights both the UN Declaration and the European Conventio
Both emphasize that private communication and correspondence are human rights
Man moves away from it and that's probably why I think that even with this proposal
It would risk falling into court
Because it so blatantly violates human rights
This proposal has been put to a vote similar to its predecessor
He has been up for a vote a couple of times
There is now a fear that Germany will vote for this proposal
You are clearly against it what are you going to do now
We are doing what we can to put pressure on the other Swedish parties
They are not least in the EU withdrawal movement they spoke about being against it
The government has representatives who go to Brussels and want to have a say
Even more chat control than what is already on the table
So we are trying to put pressure on them we are trying to raise people's awareness
That's at home about what is actually happening
Because it's somewhere that the Moderate Party and the other parties
Social Democrats Christian Democrats and Liberals if they get away with this
Then they will continue then they will
not stop and limit our personal privacy
The people's education in this regard is important
We argue as much as we can here in the parliament for simply
Try to have a majority that says no to these proposals on client-side scanning
It is obviously the case that the European Parliament's
stance influences how the Council of Ministers' discussions end
What is the situation in the cabinet today and what is the situation in the parliament
It's just like yourself said it's Germany that is sitting as a sort of
Watchman in the current situation These are several countries Belgium the Netherlands Finland
with more people who are opponents of this proposal
If Germany takes their side there will be a so-called blocking minority
Then the proposal falls or at least gets put in the freezer
Men when Germany is in a slump and gets worse it's like this again and then it gets worse
A negotiation with the European Parliament and we risk getting chat control 2.0
