Anders Edvardsson Political Scientist Welcome here
Thank you
Donald Trump delivered a very strong speech at the United Nations General Assembly
He strongly criticizes the UN among other things
What can be said about this statement and his comments on the UN
Yes he was the one in a speech where the UN celebrated 80 years
Yes it was a historic speech but I believe in many ways
In a way that the UN and its friends did not wish for
Because in practice it turned out to be a one-hour scolding
About what the UN has become and how it doesn't work so to speak
Well it was
FN was created once in the past on American initiative more or less
After World War II as a way to try to create an
international system that would prevent new world wars
Men since they then had to share with the Soviet Union and the
ideological conflicts that existed between the two superpowers it became
Yes from the beginning it didn't become much more than a finger's tip
They have done a lot of good over the decades on the field by drilling wells
and help the starving and injections against dangerous diseases and such things
Politically it has been either a refuge or a
playground depending on the international situation
They haven't managed to do anything bigger or more lasting in practice since they were formed
There was a great deal of hope and trust in the UN during Dag Hammarskjöld's time
But Dag Hammarskjöld was also murdered
What Trump says is that he criticizes the UN for not
They are toothless he says
He claims that she has brokered peace in several countries without receiving help from the UN in any of the cases
What is Trump trying to achieve with this
I think above all one should see this figure as a warning signal
Trump is really good at this and sending signals
He hasn't really focused much on the UN
He didn't do much during his first period
At the beginning of his second he's had different priorities
Ukraine and crime fighting at home and closing the border with Mexico and such
FN represents just a certain ideological or rather theoretical world view
This so-called internationalist liberalism dates all the way back to the German philosopher Kant
If all the world's countries became democratic and started trading with each other and politically socially and culturally cooperating lasting peace would eventually emerge
That's a beautiful vision and it has had a huge impact
It had a huge influence especially in Europe after Europe almost killed itself through two world wars
That's just a theory a vision or what many would call an illusion
For it has turned out that regardless of how many democracies we get and how much countries trade with each other
Then war and unrest will break out anyway
This undermines first of all it is a weakness in itself and then it undermines the trust in this globalist new world order that has emerged over the past 30 years
Well he's Trump and for this reason as well as others quite negatively disposed towards him
She has a completely different theoretically based world order that is more based on the idea that the world is as it is
It consists of and should continue to consist of completely independent national states that are eager to cooperate as much as possible
One must be aware that because human nature is what it is there will always be problems dangers and even wars and disasters
But they must somehow be handled by the international community as a collective rather than as a single entity which is the idea behind the UN
All countries in practice in politics it's like a huge global EU that was originally intended for countries to give up some independence
The bigger good and then the UN would take care of it and play the role of the police and fix the world
It didn't work at all during the Cold War because when the Soviet Union supported something the US opposed it and vice versa
Even after this the UN has in practice only been a paper tiger that becomes serious as soon as something needs to be taken more seriously
So the US has basically sent American troops partly Europeans Frenchmen Englishmen if something serious is to happen so to speak
FN has indeed remained a discussion club It has approved certain actions over the years the Korean War the Gulf War in 1990 bu
It didn't really happen through the UN itself so to speak It was thanks to the US that the two resolutions could be carried out
So that's something Trump and other Americans have been receiving for a long time and they also pay much more than anyone else to this paper tiger
At the top of everything else if we are to mention everything it's just that the system is thoroughly corrupted It has become a brothel for the world's dictatorships
I mean this infamous council which for what it's worth seems to always include countries like Iran North Korea Syria and others
He successfully used NATO for many years He threatened to leave NATO if Europeans didn't start paying which gave them such a scare that eventually they did start paying
So I think this should be seen somewhat as a favorite when it comes to it
Yes the UN Human Rights Council is well more than half composed of dictatorships if I'm not completely mistaken
It changes from year to year
It has been more than half dictatorships in any case
In the talk Trump criticizes very much He criticizes China and India for supporting Russia by buying oil and thereby supporting and keeping the war against Ukraine going
He also criticizes NATO I think the EU has a plan to become independent of Russian gas by 2027 and many believe it won't work
It will take longer than that What do you think about it
Yes there are many people who complain that Trump just talks from the hip so to speak thinking one thing one day and another the next
Men he takes a couple of steps back and swallows and you can clearly see that Carn has obviously a more elaborate plan
For almost all of these themes they are connected in a larger whole in this speech
He indirectly criticized China and India by buying oil and funding the war against Ukraine
He also tried First he tried to lure Putin to the negotiating table
You mixed your American optimism with a mysterious reality
Now he has moved from rhetoric to action and has started using a tougher language towards Moscow NATO countries and shooting down Russian planes if they violate
She has also handled it properly so Ukraine can actually get out of this war without authoritarian losses which is completely new
It was a big part of his original peace plan that he wanted peace so badly that he considered it worth a province or two in Ukraine to end this mass uprising
She has changed the language here and now is putting all the pressure on Moscow
Both economically and politically it has been shaped by the criticism of India and China and now also regarding NATO and Ukraine
It shows that he has a larger plan where the different movable parts he fine-tunes and changes but the goal remains the same
He also urges caution in his speech regarding weapons of mass destruction
This is also the same week that Russia is trying to bomb the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine
What does Trump hope to gain from this conflict
He wants peace in this conflict between Russia and Ukraine
He's not that sensitive or has not been at least as I just hinted at
He can imagine territorial boundary changes to get peace or he has done it anyway
I think that's still what he's sticking to even though he's changed the language a bit
He possesses nuclear and biological and other weapons of mass destruction
Trump hates war and he is not a military person even though he is willing to take a hard stance when needed
He belongs to a generation that grew up during the Cold War
This nuclear war threat of the 50s 60s 70s and 80s which I partially grew up with also
For us who were there nuclear biological and chemical weapons have a special place in our minds
That was the big fear when growing up and I think I still see him now
He is willing to pay any price to prevent such weapons from being used
We saw earlier this year that he was ready to bomb Iran to stop their nuclear program
If the Russians start trying to bomb nuclear power plants and other targets that falls pretty much within the same region so to speak
I think that was mainly a warning to Russia not to play with fire here
You probably have problems
She has certainly called them a paper tiger and other things
It fits into a larger picture even if it's hard to see exactly how
I think it's very much about which generation he belongs to
Trump also basically criticizes the entire EU for its immigration policy
Why is this important for Trump and why is this criticism so harsh
It is important for the West
He has expressed the exact same opinions about the US before he became president
The streets back then this uncontrolled mass migration and the subsequent lack of demands for assimilatio
It is a potential culture destroyer
We have seen this partially in the USA but mostly in Europe
Many of Europe's countries are now on the verge of ceasing to function in many ways
Britain has emerged as the saddest example right now
Otherwise it would have been Germany and France earlier which have been closest
Mass immigration has reached such a level that societies are beginning to crack
Sweden is also there in some areas if you say outside of Stockholm
and Malmö especially Uppsala and Gothenburg to some extent
The linguistic religious cultural and ethnic divisions have become so large tha
The large group does not respect the police and other authorities
Language difficulties gang violence there's no need to explain this to Swedes
It's exactly what Trump warned Europe about
If you keep going this way it will happen I think he literally speaks
Using the word will send it to hell
Because that's exactly what it's about to do
Britain is obviously crippled in some areas due to such things
Let's call it what it is ethnic conflicts because that's what it has become
Here he uses the sledgehammer to try to punch a hole in this one
The dominant European discourse that all immigration is good
the more the better
We will be kind we will not demand linguistic or
cultural adaptation because that is considered racism
Oh man you can't deny that certain immigrant groups are more prone to crime
This doesn't need to be explained to Swedes who have seen and heard it
Something other than old media in the last 20-25 years
It's in a way the emperor in the naked with the famous boy
who finally said it publicly Trump is playing that role here
For Europe it has almost not been possible to talk about this until now
Everything is quiet here and the lid is put on and it is whispered and it is stifled
Left started talking about the problems of decreasing freedom of speech back in the spring
And I think once again we see the outline of a larger picture here
To save the Western world is this administration's ambition
From cultural sclerosis political sclerosis
they read the louse of the Europeans because they simply behave foolishly
The USA also has a very big problem with the border with Mexico
Fentanyl and opioid overdoses are the absolute most common cause of death among young people
It is a hybrid war from China
He points out in this speech how many European prisons were born in other
countries But he also goes into Palestine
He strongly opposes
countries recognizing Palestine now
What is the criticism based on That has its own history
The closeness and friendship between the United States and Israel have been strong and warm from the beginning
The USA initially recognized Israel largely due to its dependence
The former president's personal friendship with several Jews In the
light of the Holocaust these details had begun to come out
Years after the war how bad it had been
That created a special friendship between Tel Aviv and Washington
It has spread throughout American society
Due to cultural political and religious reasons
There are relatively many Jewish Americans
Among religious Christian evangelical Americans there is a belief that
The Jews must be allowed to return home before Jesus can come back
The USA and Israel are small countries by themselves
A new immigrant land in an environment populated by what they see as wilder
The American case was once the Indians
For the Israelis it is mostly hostile Arabs and Muslims
The American-Israeli friendship exists on many different levels
Trump goes out and says he doesn't want to
reward the Palestinians and thereby Hamas
For these huge crimes that they know about here every year with this attack on Israel
It's not surprising at all
It would be rather surprising if one had suggested the opposite
I am sure that the USA may one day consider
recognizing some form of Palestinian state
They must get rid of Hamas and there must be some form of functioning democracy
They have proven the complete opposite throughout their entire existence since 1948
Trump has been criticized by many and all political opponents call him a dictator
What is the long-term goal What does Trump want to achieve
I actually think it's that simple
He simply wanted to do a favor for his home country
Many others including Han believe that the US has lost its way in recent decades
Various facilities taxes have become too high regulations too many immigration too large
The crackdown on cattle rustlers and bandits has become too obvious
He was a multi-billionaire world-famous with a fantastic family a beautiful wife
She has never been really interested in politics
Why would he enter politics if he didn't have a genuine interest in doing something
He doesn't do it for the money he doesn't do it for the fame he doesn't do it for the women
I think Trump is a square person he talks like a construction worker as someone said
That disrupts so many people in so many different ways
He doesn't play the political game he doesn't sound like a politician
He thinks outside the political and academic boxes and above all he has no respect
For established elites or established opinions
He rather has a young boy's joy in challenging the established norms and such
I think you have to see him for that he's good and bad
You don't need to agree with everything he says to understand
He's just trying to do something he genuinely believes in
But then it's because he's the guy who's pushing for so many different groups
Academics elites globalists immigrants proponents free traders
He almost hasn't missed a single established group at least once or twice
Oh well that's just it that everyone has become in order to continue being accepted in the finer circles
You can't like Trump It's that simple Being against him has become a class marker in some way
It's quite clear now during his second term that it's beginning to slowly but surely fade away
He attended some NATO meeting here last month where he was treated completely differently
He was called dad and I have no idea what it was
There is also a certain shift among many European leading politicians
They still have the suspicion and distrust remaining at lower levels such as academics civil servants and so on
I think people understand that we have to live with him for another three and a half years
There's no point in continuing to act the way we have because it led nowhere
There's something so provocative and provocative about just making even more
This criticism of China and India for buying Russian oil and NATO for buying Russian gas
Kenya is allied with Russia and Iran in a way that no other countries are
India wants the US to take its side but right now India has been moving closer to China
Because of the high tariffs that the US has imposed
on India How do you think the recalibration happening from Washington is working
It all depends entirely on which region and which level you are looking at this from
Right now there is a problem between India and the USA
We had several economic reasons India
has a history of being in conflict with China
Men now they seem to be trying to find each other in
a kind of enemy of the enemy this with Trump's tariffs
I am quite convinced that for historical and cultural reasons
the US and India will eventually find each other
He's the big ego here who's crashing
We'll just have to see how long it takes
But the big problem the hardest nut to crack is China
It was due to political ideological economic and military reasons
Kina will be the dominant force in Southeast Asia
Even though Trump is in favor of a much more limited and peaceful foreign policy
It has been over a hundred years since there have been significant interests in East Asia
I think that is classic great power complications
Plus this is that the Chinese regime formally still a communist
regime has indeed built this so-called Chinese economic miracle
All one leg
It's a chair that stands one leg so to speak
Oh it's just mass exports of cheap goods
Since the USA is the world's largest market the USA is absolutely essential
To prevent the Chinese economy from collapsing
This is something Trump has realized and said that you have exploited us for decades
It's time for you to start paying your share by paying tariffs
They don't like this and it has a lot to do with Asian
culture - not backing down especially not foreigners
So that's an ongoing rot that's coming
It will probably take several years before it gets resolved so to speak
Kenya has now promised in several rounds that we will accept these customs agreements
They start to muddle and protest again after a week and a month
As mentioned it's an ongoing process
I think as I said to get back to your broader question in the long ru
since I cannot see how China could possibly avoid
and adapt to the new American trade policy in the long run
We simply cannot afford and do not have as low
tariffs as possible against the American market
So I think that around the world it will be that India will realize
It is better to be a friend of the United States than to be a friend of one of its enemies
They are big egos as they say there are big countries
involved so it may take some time before it settles
