Jennifer, I feel like more than anybody, you've really created your own destiny.
With this film you produce, sing, dance, play multiple characters, comedy, drama, all in one.
What does it mean to you to have a role like this?
Because I feel like so often you've nailed things,
and people haven't rewarded you as I thought you should have been.
Thank you so much. I appreciate that, by the way.
It meant everything.
When Bill sent me this script and I saw that I got to sing and dance and do 12 musical numbers
and act and play three different characters, I was like,
is this happening to me right now?
Is this the thing I've been waiting for since I was 8 years old in front of the TV
watching West Side Story with my mom, fantasizing that that would be my life?
It was really a dream come true in every sense of the word.
And I had been waiting for it my whole career as well.
It feels that way.
100%. You've been with me since the beginning
and watched me through all different iterations and all different kinds of movies,
big hits, bombs, the whole thing.
If you're lucky enough to have a long career and still be around,
you're going to have experienced all aspects of the business
from the biggest victories to the lowest lows.
Right now, I feel like I'm in my best moment that I've ever been.
A big part of that is this film.
Women struggle to walk in heels.
What you do with a long dress and stretch and platform.
The horizontal spin.
With the fringe.
I was literally in character, just like, don't break, don't break, don't clap.
Also, the gold dress was about 50 pounds.
On my shoulders, carrying a 50 pound weight on my shoulders.
I know, and she kept making it tighter at the waist.
I was like, oh my God.
So does performing live help you with something like that?
100%.
I think, you know, when Bill, he said,
one of the reasons I wanted you to do this role,
because I know you can do the numbers from top to bottom in one take.
On one shot.
And I was like, but you're going to do coverage, right?
And he's like, no, not really.
And I was like.
People have to remember that when they see it.
I said, what?
For you, you've got so many highs and lows,
like Jennifer does in this.
I was wondering if there was a particular moment
that was a real struggle for you.
Because you've got a lot of beats.
A struggle in terms of what?
Just like getting there emotionally.
I have to say, I really, I don't want to be that person,
but I just connected with both the characters
in such fun, different ways.
With Kendall, it was an opportunity to like,
it was fun to be in the 1940s, 50s kind of musical world
and to live my Gene Kelly, Errol Flynn fantasy
and to dance with Jennifer.
We were like Fred and Ginger.
Yeah, the tango.
So that was super fun.
But with Molina, the script,
you just trust the script to carry you.
And I found the emotional truth.
I mean, I think the hardest thing was we did,
because we were in a tiny cell,
we would do six to 11 pages uninterrupted monologue
because Molina never shuts up.
But we would do all that coverage,
like wide and then medium.
So that was like an exercise on my theater training
because it was basically we were doing a play
within the film world.
There's the line that,
I will never feel unhappy again.
Do you each have something where you feel like
you will always be your happy place?
I mean, I love that line because he says,
sometimes you know the thing about being happy
is that you think you'll never be unhappy again.
And it's such a beautiful line that he wrote.
I mean, I've experienced moments like that in my life
when you're in love, when you accomplish a dream
that you never thought you could get there,
and you get there.
And that is such a real sentiment.
It's such a good line.
For me, there's like a 15 second to 30 second window
in the middle of an embrace with someone you love.
You know your shoulders are like this,
and all of a sudden you realize,
I can relax.
It's those 15 seconds where it's just like,
oh yeah, this is why we do it.
For me, it's chocolate.
Actually, I like that!
