At RiskWorld 2025, industry leaders highlighted cyber insurance and emerging risks as key growth areas in specialty insurance. With the market expected to grow 30–40% over the next five years, where should brokers and carriers focus now?
Insurance business was recently on the ground at RiskWorld, the Risk and
Insurance Management Society's annual summit, where we heard insurance
executives' views on the most critical issues in the industry today.
In this episode of Insurance Business TV, we ask, in your view, what's the
biggest opportunity for growth in specialty insurance today?
We see two areas from our aspect, cyber insurance, you know, new emerging
trends going on, ever-expanding market, probably supposed to expand by 30% to
40% in the next five years.
So we see that as a great opportunity.
We have the expertise there.
Credit insurance is an opportunity we have.
We have one new sector launching this year.
It's credit and political risk, area where somebody as strong as Nationwide
with our strong ratings, really have a great opportunity to be a great
counterparty, and then our surety division, which has been around for over 60 years.
We've seen a great expansion on that in the past 15 years, really great
opportunity from a construction side and more of the credit insurance side.
So it's been a great area for us, great opportunity.
I think the biggest growth, somebody said to me many years ago, don't be a
generalist, be a specialist.
And I think that with the commoditization of pricing and some of the
facilitation that's coming through, some of what has been historically specialty
lines of insurance, I think are becoming more generic in the way that they're
handled, the way that they're placed, and the way that they're advised to
customers.
So for me, it's the, what are the truly specialist areas and how do you
differentiate yourself as an insurer by showing that you've got a greater
understanding of those compared to your peer group.
And if you can share that with your customer, continue to enhance the products
themselves, make them broader in the risk that you can absorb and share that data
as to the risks that the customers potentially face in, then I think that's
the key to maintaining that real depth around specialty content.
Sure.
I think for us, it's our commitment to our specialties, right?
So I'm really making sure that we're bringing the entirety of the
portfolio to the client.
So our marine business, we're investing in energy, our surety platform, our
private equity platform, all of those areas where we can have a more specific
dialogue with our clients and really get into the nuts and bolts of their
business, those create opportunities for us because they're a way for us to
differentiate in what's a really challenging marketplace.
