The subject of landscape painting seems clear: images of scenic, natural vistas laid out before the viewer. Throughout the long history of such works in China, however, landscape paintings were rarely about a specific location, and typically not about the land at all. In this video (11:57), which features works from the Allen's collection and others, Kevin R.E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art, highlights some of the varying ways Chinese landscape paintings can be understood.
