It has been a little over a week since the murder of Charlie Kirk which has shaken the United States
What is the mood in the United States today
I would say it's been a bit messy
At the same time this murder has really had effects
The width of the shock the depth of the shock is as expected but it is actually more
It has spread far beyond politics
The last thing I saw was Mike Jagger the singer having a moment on stage
At the same time as I say it is fragmented it seems that the politics are unfortunately heading back to the old bitter usual almost record fast
There is still some restraint in the comments from the left but it has started to sound just like before
Many people have said that he had only himself to blame for saying controversial things
Recently we have received attention that the host Jimmy Kimmel has been suspended indefinitely by the network ABC
He went into practice on Monday and said that this murderer is a well-known left-wing extremist who has been involved in antifa circles AFA in Swedish
He was a magician and he refused to apologize for that I don't quite understand how he reasoned that
ABC and its owners shut him down recently for an indefinite period and he probably got fired for good
This has been used by people who say this is a violation of freedom of speech
What this is about is standard procedure and not freedom of speech
An ABC caregiver holds a national license under certain circumstances requiring them to be impartial and work in the public interest
It's similar to SVT and TV4 in Sweden
Oh how someone gets rid of someone who is obviously lying straight into the camera about one of the worst crimes in American political history in 50-60 years
I see the political game here Some people see this as an opportunity to try to turn it into a freedom of speech issue
Jimmy Kimmel is free to keep talking if he gets an offer from any other TV channel willing to accept his low level
So this has nothing to do with freedom of speech This is just politics as usual
They are trying to shift the focus away from what happened and the discomfort it caused
The murderer Tyler Robinson was with a man who was also a furry
Among other things you can find AFA messages and quotes from MIMS related to the transgender movement
What are your thoughts on that
It fits into a sad picture
The last 4-6 such delusional acts have apparently all had more or less connections to this transgender sphere
This is just part of how this modern left has become
People have openly politicized sexuality and gender This applies both in the US and in Europe especially in Sweden
If you have a group like this and you've heard for a decade or more that you are oppressed
Eventually a few will snap Even if it's just one percent that's enough
This is individual acts in all cases as far as I can see
One could take any group that has been so much in the spotlight so to speak
Some members have said that you are abused you are disadvantaged
There are indeed a small number of people who have difficulty with reality so to speak
Someone will eventually snap unfortunately it's inevitable in today's media landscape
This time it just happens to be transgender who will be in the future if this continues We'll have to see
Jimmy Kimmel got the spark as you said Many people have also been seen online on social media and celebrating that Charlie Kirk was murdered
What are your thoughts when you see so many people in a country celebrating the murder of a political opponent
It's just sad and frightening at the same time This has nothing to do with right or left
This is more an attitude issue a culture issue The polarization has gone so far that the sides have started to dehumanize each other
This is what happens during war During the world war Germans were called dogs and Japanese were called monkeys and yellow bastards
Dehumanizing enemies to a level where it becomes easier to kill them has been limited to wars and revolutions before
Clerics and lay brothers have partially engaged in it in political contexts on the absolute extremes
A survey from a few months ago here indicated that Americans under 39 years old over 40% of all those under 39 think that political violence and murder are sometimes acceptable
So this is not an exceptional problem so to speak This is a major cultural issue especially on the left side in the last 10-20-30 years
There are also individual groups on the far right Michigan militias and Oklahoma bombers
It's clearly become a left-wing issue both structurally and broadly Why one could debate whether it's globalization the fall of communism or some combination of everything
It would probably have to be the subject of some academic research eventually It is clearly a civilizational issue today that so many people are willing to resort to violence even in fully functioning democracies
In 1989 Romania was forced to use violence to remove Ceaușescu That's acceptable But in a fully functioning system we also see this in Europe Sweden has had its share of AFA violence from the demands in Gothenburg at the start of the 2000s and later
It's these kinds of small sectarian groups that convince themselves and defend themselves by claiming they live in an oppressive society where their will isn't respected
This happens everywhere
Tyler Robinson the murderer was an Antifa supporter He wrote anti-fascist messages on the bullets including Bella Ciao one of the movement's most well-known battle songs
Donald Trump has now classified Antifa as a terrorist organization What are the consequences
It's therefore money from abroad It's apparently one of the definitional requirements for terrorism
We'll just have to see if he Trump usually doesn't say things like that unless he knows he can get away with it so it's probably possible he already has information that they have foreign funding either entirely or partially
When something is labeled as terrorist that's the effect it gets He's done that even when it comes to drug traffickers organizations and such
He's using it now to be able to sink Venezuelan ships filled with drugs heading towards the US This is done for a specific reason not just to send a message and it's not just symbolic
It has harsh consequences for those in the receiving line so to speak For Americans they have a much harsher view offenders and how to deal with them than many more or less slightly more lenient Swedes do
Banning organizations is a two-edged sword In Sweden you cannot do it that way In Germany you can There we have seen the blue mosque closed down
It's quite bizarre They had a program that CSU and CDU were responsible for in the 80s or 90s It's certainly possible for something like that to happen But how do you handle such a situation
It's about being wise and cautious And you open such doors Perhaps the situation is serious enough to do so You can certainly have a discussion about it But when you open such doors you must be extremely careful
It does not occur here The first amendment to the constitution is more or less watertight And I have not heard Trump say anything or anyone else say anything about freedom of speech
Staring into the camera without blinking like Jimmy Kimmel did I have noted that this detail is consistently omitted at least in Swedish media But that's another discussion
It's clear that it's easy to frame it as a freedom of speech issue I can see that but just because it's easy doesn't make it right so to speak
When it comes to Jimmy Kimmel and the freedom of speech issue As I understand it there was a law before that said that the media had to to some extent stick to the truth But that law disappeared under Obama or Biden Is that correct
It was actually news to me too Until the 1980s there was a law that also required media to be balanced The idea was that if you had a conservative radio program you had to have a liberal one as well
That made it difficult Most TV and radio stations avoided having political programs altogether That rule was lifted in 1987 and that's when this talk radio culture emerged featuring Rush Limbaugh and others mainly on the right wing
An ending question If Antifa is classified as a terrorist organization what does that mean for Antifa and what types of authorities would federal agencies gain in that case
It will mean that these small cells consist of just a few thousand maybe ten thousand people who are really deeply involved in this apart from a lot of people on Facebook who just like and share
It will now mean that what they say and what they threaten with violence against people and property will now be able to be investigated The FBI or whoever it may be will now be able to knock on the door and take them in for questioning
If it can be proven spoken about and sentenced to prison for incitement or whatever it may be called In a much more effective and broader way than is currently possible since they are not classified as terrorists
It's when you classify something as terrorism that the penalties increase and the police's powers are expanded in various ways for surveillance and such which is harder when you're examining something not classified as terrorism
Very small similarities In the US we talk about semi-organized cells of potential let's call them terrorists
So younger people who are willing to commit crimes maybe even murder or at the very least physical destruction of property and beating up those in comparison to locking up 86-year-old women for what they thought on Facebook
Certainly theoretically speaking one could say there are some similarities but in practice there are none And as mentioned the big difference is the first amendment to the American Constitution which guarantees more or less total freedom of speech
So almost even to the point of speech anarchy It's only military secrets and things like that which cannot be discussed publicly in general
Now there are those who say this is the threat Still one should remember that Trump himself during these ten years in politics has been the most vocal defender of free speech
For this is one of the Religious freedom and freedom of speech for the vast majority of Americans Especially on the right side it's the most sacred you can get Then people want lower taxes and strong defense and all that stuff but that's secondary
There's no way all of them will shut up Just because a lying guy lost a TV show at eleven o'clock in the evening That's hyperbole
