The government plans to significantly strengthen the judiciary in the coming years
The budget increases from 69 billion kronor in 2023 to 108 billion kronor in 2028
So a 57 percent increase
The Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer points to organized crime as the background for the initiative
Focusing on harsher penalties biometrics camera surveillance and an ongoing expansion of the police force
This marks a huge shift in the perception of punishment
This means that I focus on the rehabilitation of victims and the protection of society
Much less on the perpetrator It generally leads to a higher sentence
Especially for serious crimes
The poor should be kept inside All honest citizens should be out
And have justice for the victims
He describes the fight against gang crime as a ten-year journey
Comparisons are made with Denmark and New York where it has taken about ten years to push back the gangs
We have been on this journey for three years now
We can see that new work methods new tools and new resources are beginning to take effect
For example against shootings elder abuse and crime reporting when serious crimes increase
We are on the right track but we are certainly not there yet And we want to make that very clear
The government also wants to shift the focus from the perpetrator to the victim
It's about the punishment providing justice and support measures being strengthened
Victims no longer have to personally pursue compensation
It is more reasonable for the state to pay the victims' compensation directly first
But then the perpetrator continues with full force against society and the public
It is not something a vulnerable victim should have to do themselves
When it comes to sentencing they have already been sentenced for serious weapons offenses and explosives
The government is now proceeding with additional penalties for about 50 crimes
According to Petra Lund's criminal policy review
Then we will proceed with other parts as mentioned here at today's press conference
For example when it comes to detention orders lock up people indefinitely who are simply dangerous to society
People who repeatedly fall into for example serious rapes or whatever it may be
They must be held in custody both to give the victim justice and to protect society from these dangerous individuals
We understand that some people cannot be rehabilitated
But we must have the ability to protect society from these people
But that is where we aim through certain penal reforms
