Hello and welcome back to the garden.
Today's video is all about autumn, autumn colours.
Started by changing the pots outside the front door here.
I don't have a porch.
I know I watch a lot of YouTube channels in the US and Canada and they have these lovely
big porches that they can decorate.
I don't have that.
I have a small step area but it doesn't mean that you can't actually decorate outside the
front of your house.
These pots, this is a perennial, this is a rubecchia.
It's rubecchia sunbecchia carolina and you'll have seen earlier in the video when I made
these pots up and I just think it gives a really pop of colour and I love autumn and
autumn colours and I'll show you some of the colours in the hot border or the helleniums
that are bright orange and yellows.
I do like those kind of colours.
Total contrast to the white garden which I video an awful lot but I still do like to
have colour around.
So the first thing I did was make these and the next thing I'm going to do is make a wall
basket.
I've got a garland for the front, a garland, yeah sorry, a wreath for the front of the
door.
Garlands.
I don't have a garland.
I've got a wreath and I've got a few more pots to add.
No pumpkins as yet.
I'll keep that till October but I'm really enjoying changing everything out so let's
get on with it.
So for anyone that's watched any of the videos that I've made in the past, they'll know that
I love to make wall baskets, hanging baskets, pots, it's one of my favourite things to do
in the garden and I love this time of year when we change from all of the pastel colours
that you use in the summer months to these very strong dark colours which I do like to
have in this wall basket.
In the centre, I'm going to add this euphobia.
Now I've just bought this one.
This is Miner's Merlot and it's just beautiful.
It's very dark burgundy leaves with red tinge in the middle of them, new leaves coming out
and it's just spectacular.
And I'll add this into the shade borders in the summer because I do quite like to be in
a shady spot but I've got an awful lot more plants.
I have a stash of plants that I use from season to season, ivies, grasses.
I do buy every year Violas and Pandas so they'll go along the front but I have an idea what
I want to do.
I've got an awful lot of plants here, I won't use all of them here but I never quite know
until it's actually done how it's going to look.
So what I'll do is I'll add the plants to the front, through the moss, through the actual
basket, then when it's all done to the front section, then I'll add the compost in the
middle and add the plants.
So you'll actually see it as it goes along, I'll add some, take some away but hopefully
it'll look good at the end of the day.
So let's get started.
So the first thing I'm going to add is some ivies and you can do it two ways.
You can actually wrap this in newspaper very tight and then poke it through the actual
side of the basket.
Ivies are really tough, I just squash it down a little bit and in it goes and turn it till
you're happy that you've got it facing the right way, that's the first plant added.
Next, same again, these might be a little bit more difficult because they are a bigger
plant but basically the same technique, I give them a good old water and I'm going to
put them through, if I can, the hanging basket.
If not, I'll push it this way, I think that's what I'll do, feed it through this way.
So next layer is a layer of moss and I'm just going to put that on the front of the basket,
pushing it down on top of the root balls that you've just pushed through, so it's covering
the plants that you've just added, like that, and I'll add that all the way around.
So now is the time to add the compost, I'll put you on a time-lapse, I'll add the final
plants and you'll see what it looks like at the end.
So it's the next day, sunshine, we're having a fabulous autumn this year.
Spring was lousy, summer wasn't much better, very wet, but autumn has been really good
so far.
We've had a lot of dry weather and we've also had sunshine like today.
But this section that I'm standing in is the only place in the whole of the quarry garden
that has sun from morning till night, the only place.
The border, you can see at the back, is now in full shade, as is the white garden and
all the other areas, so I like to make the most of it around here.
I grow a lot of ornamental grasses in pots and that's because I don't have the ground
or the sunshine to grow them in a border elsewhere.
So I'm just going to add some plants around them, just to add to the autumn display, and
these are coleus, they came from a pot that I've pulled apart, a summer pot, and I'm just
going to place them in and around all of these penstemon grasses.
So that's that one, and the other one, I think I'll add, I've bought three of these kale,
these are just ornamental kale, you can get cabbages this time of year from the garden
centre, and what I'm going to do is add them all the way around the perimeter of that one.
And I just think it adds to the autumn display.
Now some of these are a little bit worse for wear, but they will last until, certainly
the first frosts, as long as they're kept watered.
I'm just going to add them in and around here, I've got one more for the back.
Now I don't tend to buy a lot of these kales and cabbages because with having very wet
weather here, I do get a lot of slugs and snails, and they love a cabbage and a kale.
The last thing I'm going to add, flower wise, is a mum, at least two mums.
I don't bother to even plant them, it's just a waste of compost.
In my climate they will probably last about three to four weeks, so I just have a pot
where I can stand them inside, I've just had a plastic pot, place them inside, you can't
actually see the top of the pot, and if you're going to buy mums, try and pick them where
they've got lots of flowers, because obviously in the hotter climate they won't last very
long, for me, about a month I would say, as long as they're well watered, and you can
see here we're in the shade, that's why they don't flower as much either.
Now I'm just adding these outdoor candle holders, they've got some plastic pumpkins inside that
I got from Amazon, I'm just going to add them.
They normally just have candles in them, but I've also got a wreath, as I mentioned earlier,
now I don't have time to make a wreath this time of year, in fact I've never had an autumn
wreath before.
It's my busiest time of year here in the Quarry Garden, I have about sixteen to eighteen hedges
to cut, very big hedges all the way around the Quarry Garden, and it takes about a month
to complete them all, so it's my busiest time of year, apart from early spring, so I've
bought this particular one from the range, it's got some outdoor lights on it, probably
won't use those, but it's got the battery packs and a nice hessian cover, but it's one
of the more muted four wreaths, I think it's really pretty, so I'm going to add that to
the door, I really like that, plus with all the rain we get, it won't get damaged, I'd
be able to keep it from year to year, but what I am going to add is some hydrangeas,
just to make it more me, so I'm just going to wire some hydrangeas in all the way around,
so while I do that, why don't I give you a tour of what's flowering, autumn flowering
here in the Quarry Garden, and then I'll bring you back so you can actually see what this
all looks like at the end, but I'll say thank you now for watching and for all the new subscribers,
I very much appreciate everyone that's subscribed in the last couple of months, and I'll see
you soon, bye for now.
