A dozen people demonstrated outside a Jewish school in Stockholm on Monday afternoon
The police received reports about flags and banners but the situation was described as calm
The school was already empty of students and according to the demonstrators the action was directed at an Israeli soldier who was involved in a conversation nearby
Culture Minister Prisa Liljestrand still criticizes the choice of location and states that demonstrations against Israel should not be held at Jewish schools
I think it's completely unacceptable behavior to stand outside a school where children and young people are passing to and from their school activities
I actually don't think it's possible to justify it in any way
Antisemitism has increased sharply in Sweden since the October 7 attacks How do we protect our minorities in Sweden
I think it is incredibly important for society to come together and to drive out antisemitism from all the dark corners where it exists
So that we clearly mark and state that this is not how we want Swedish society to look
The government is making a series of efforts to promote Jewish life in Sweden and to suppress and drive away antisemitism
Everyone in society must take responsibility and actually speak up that just because something is legal does not mean it is appropriate
Oh to stand outside a school with such messages and make Swedish children and youth messengers for a crisis that is taking place outside our country
It is nothing that Swedish children and young people should have to bear the responsibility for
We will stand up for our freedom of opinion we will stand up for our freedom of demonstration It is part of our democracy
One can also exercise in other ways that are more appropriate
Freedom of demonstration in Sweden is very extensive Should one be allowed to obtain permits for this type of demonstration
You have to apply for permits for demonstrations which is also the case today
Men given the recent incidents on the last page including the one reported yesterday
So my colleague Gunnar Strömmar the minister of justice met with the parties in the Riksdag yesterday and had a conversation about how we should view this going forward
And also if there are things that need to be regulated in order to maintain democracy but still be safe and secure for all other people around
