Fig toast! Fig toast!
Fig toast!
Absolutely amazing.
I started growing figs a couple of years ago,
fell in love with the history,
and saw there was a huge community online,
on Facebook and whatnot.
They're all my friends.
We're all figaholics.
And I reached out to a fellow that I didn't know,
and I said, hey, would you like to co-host
a fig festival?
And this is what we have here.
Two thousand years ago,
they were considered the fruit of the gods.
And so you'll get two to four hundred
little miniature fruits inside each fig.
I love it.
Last year on our first fig festival,
we had over four hundred people
in the rain.
This is yellow longneck. It's one of the larger figs.
There are over a hundred
fig varieties that are hearty
in our area, and probably over
a thousand worldwide.
Probably about thirty varieties in here.
From Italian figs to
Palestinian, French,
and Portuguese.
We have the top fig growers,
the fig tree growers from the area,
attending and selling their figs.
And once you try them, you'll never
not eat them. In quantity.
They come from
hours away. There are people that come
and spend the weekend here to come to this
festival. It's amazing, and it's a nice
fundraiser for Green Allies
to continue our work.
Green Allies itself is a
nonprofit that promotes
student leadership and environmental sustainability,
especially with our youth.
And then the Althouse Arboretum
itself is a project that was created
by students for the community.
And then, do you grow them yourself?
I do, yes.
And I was just so surprised to see the community
that surrounded figs. We had all the different
workshops, which were classrooms filled
with people who were excited and interested
to learn about the history of figs,
and how to grow your own figs, and all this
different information. So, it was definitely
a huge community bustling with
excitement. Once you get to know
the different varieties and the history
behind it, it's really fun.
Yeah. Well, this was a
one-day event. If you missed it, there are plenty of
opportunities to get involved with the Althouse
Arboretum. And of course, we
hope to see you at next year's Fig Festival.
Cheers!
