After deciding to return to their hometown to custom-build their forever home, our clients brought us on to furnish and decorate it from head to toe, including selecting all of their lighting. Our clients also consulted us on some finishes for their home – they already had wonderful taste and just needed that extra bit of reassurance on some of their design decisions. Our clients resonated with our "relaxed elegance" design aesthetic: timeless and organic mixed with a few modern details. Their home's style is, for the most part, traditional. So, when curating their decor and lighting, we chose pieces with classic silhouettes to complement, and mixed in some sculptural, modern accents to keep the design fresh.
ProjectHomewardBound is also home to three kids and two dogs, so family and pet-friendly choices were top of mind when selecting our clients' furniture. We incorporated lots of linen-like durable fabrics and ensured that high-use zones, like the family room and dining areas, were filled with comfortable seating and washable materials. We thoughtfully used high-impact lighting throughout the home to create key moments, for example, the tiered basket lights in the double-height entry. These moments help make this custom home feel even more unique and luxurious.
Designer furniture and decor carefully picked by our team helped bring this home to life and our clients couldn't be happier with the result!

Welcome to Project Homeward Bound. Our clients were originally from Ottawa but
had moved to the U.S. for work and were returning home to build their forever
home. So they brought our team on to furnish the home from head to toe
including lighting and our client had amazing style but wanted us to review
the finishes to really provide her with that extra layer of reassurance. The home
style is traditional so we wanted the pieces to complement that but also add
in some layers that have contemporary silhouettes to them as well as you'll
see a lot of organic-ness, I think that's a word, in the lighting. So let's get to
the part that everyone is most excited for, the home tour. Follow me and if you
haven't already, subscribe to our YouTube channel.
The entrance in this home definitely makes a statement with the double-height
windows and having the opportunity to use larger furniture that you wouldn't
be able to do in a smaller entrance like the pedestal table, the sofa, having a
full-style vintage rug and getting to drop these beautiful organic beehive
style lights. They're sculptural and it adds an element of formality to the
space. Let's talk about this beautiful moody office. First off the color which I
know you all want to know is Barista by Benjamin Moore but the clients are avid
book readers so we really wanted to create this library feel where you have
beautiful trinkets and family heirlooms and whether you want to get down to
business or take a nap this is the perfect environment. It's cozy with the
boucle textures as well as the wood tones and beautiful custom drapery that
flanks the windows. Off the entrance we come into the great room, the heart of
the home where all the action is happening and in the kitchen we wanted
to make sure that we layered in a lot of textures that would complement the
dining and the family room space so we went with woven island stools that also
brought in a reference point to the organic lighting that's in the entrance
and we paired them with a brass stool so that it wasn't too heavy to have so many
seats with a larger silhouette to them. With 10-foot ceilings we had the
opportunity to do oversized lights and in the kitchen we did these beautiful
concrete pendants again to add in another texture and being able to have
the pendants as well as the dining light fixture as well as the fireplace all
line up creates this visual balance to the space that's truly calming. In the
dining room we're going for comfort this is a family of three plus the two dogs
so we have about eight seating at the island and since everything is open
concept we went with these beautiful custom upholstered chairs in a
performance fabric of course for durability but also best part on wheels
so that conversationally everybody can feel involved and going with a dark wood
it really complements some of the other finishes in the space with the lighter
toned wood and kind of the mix that we like to do throughout our palettes and
here we went with a pretty simple silhouette on the dining room pendant
because we have these larger scale pendants in the kitchen. The great room
was designed around this beautiful large format traditional fireplace and the
sectional frames out the great room perfectly but most importantly it fits
the entire family. We did it in a performance fabric so although it has
that linen look it's very durable. We styled the sofa as well as the chaise
with beautiful throw pillows that pull in the olive tones and the mulberry
tones that you'll see throughout the home. The coffee table has this chunky
silhouette with these nice dovetail details on each corner and looks like
these wood beams that bring in the natural environment that surrounds us.
It's also at a low scale which is perfect for the smaller children all the
family to gather around. Since our team chose all of the lighting throughout the
home we were able to create some very intentional moments including this art
wall where we have a piece by Justin Thomason from New Zealand called the
Arid Peaks of Benmore and it feels like you're looking out a window at this
natural view because of the scale of it. As you can see from our clients library
they love to read so this corner was the perfect moment to tailor a little
reading nook for them and framed out by the custom drapery it's so cozy. Custom
drapery is a really important feature to consider when you're doing a custom home.
You want to tailor it to the space and here we layered the windows with woven
Roman shades and linen drapery. Off the great room on the main level you'll find
the primary suite. This is their sanctuary it's peaceful it's all done in
a neutral palette and having the higher ceilings allowed us to go with a taller
headboard. The bed is framed out in a chagrin with an interior of boucle and
then we paired it with a classic pinstripe on the bedding. Flanked out by
nightstands in black which pick up the woven leather bench and a soft plush rug
underfoot. The primary ensuite has a very classic styling you'll see curves
throughout as well as polished nickel. The sconces are a crystal fluted glass
which are really elegant but they're also paired with a more organic pendant
over the bath which is cocoa beads and references the lighting that you'll see
in the primary suite. The bathtub in the symmetry of the space creates this
beautiful focal point framed out by the custom window treatments. Bathrooms
throughout a home don't need to have all the same styling and where we have
done more classic in the primary suite the powder room is the perfect
opportunity to do something more moody or with color and in this home we went
with a olive whimsical wallpaper. There's three kids bedrooms upstairs when we
design them we do it with an elevated youthfulness in mind. We don't want to
change out the lighting or the dressers or the bed or necessarily the rug or
window treatments so where we have fun is generally the walls with either a fun
wallpaper or a wall color that you could change out through time but the rest of
them is really gonna mature and grow with the child. Thank you for joining us
for the tour of Project Homeward Bound. We hope that we inspired you and we love
to hear what your favorite space is so leave that in the comments.
