An inquiry by the US House of Representatives on Wednesday, September 3,
examined the threat to American freedom of expression and innovation from European laws,
with a focus on digital laws that lead to censorship by both Americans and American companies.
Congress leader Jim Jordan said that Europe should reduce bureaucracy
to allow the free business world to flourish.
He meant that European regulations distort the digital market,
and that laws like the EU's Digital Services Act and the UK's Online Safety Act
threaten freedom of expression around the world.
The politician and leader of the Reform UK party, Nigel Farage,
described the situation for freedom of expression in the UK.
...go to a university because some people might be offended by what he or she have to say.
Farage means that it has gone much further, with several people paying attention.
We of course have Lucy Connolly, who put out an intemperate tweet
after the savage murder of those three beautiful young girls.
She removed it three and a half hours later, sentenced to 31 months.
Connolly has since been released,
but Farage said that the restrictions against her prevented her from being present at the hearing.
The latest case is the arrest of the Irish comedian Greyham Linehan after three gender-critical statements.
Linehan said that the police posed strong ideological questions with language used by trans activists.
The British prime minister said that it was an operational decision by the police
that should focus on serious crimes,
while the chief of the Metropolitan Police in the UK said that the lack of clarity in the law
caused the police to end up in the middle of toxic cultural war debates.
The legal advisor Lorcan Price suspects that European laws such as the Digital Services Act,
DSA, have a underlying political motive.
Price said that the EU strives to set the global standard when it comes to freedom of expression.
And US companies bear the brunt disproportionately of this.
They're hijacked by the DSA to become essentially the EU's global censorship police,
whether they like it or not.
He said that democracy requires freedom of expression,
and that one must take a stand against this wave of censorship.
Malcolm Hudson reported for NTD News.
