NTD:s Daniel Monaghan rapporterar.

The political economist Zheng Guangxu says that the nature of the Chinese Communist Party
is fundamentally different compared to commercial political institutions.
According to Xu, the Communist Party is not a political party in its true sense.
He refers to Max Weber's definition, which describes political parties as voluntary groups
that compete for votes and power.
In his book, Institutional Genes, Xu traces the Communist Party's roots to secret territories.
The so-called Communist Party is a creation of Lenin.
But actually Lenin didn't really create such an important institution from scratch.
Instead, Lenin inherited these principles from those terrorist organizations.
A leading example is the organization called People's Will.
These People's Will parties call themselves terrorists.
Their core strategy is using the terrorist approach to achieve their political goals.
Xu says that Lenin and all the main founders of the Bolsheviks
originally came from these secret terrorist organizations.
He says that this is why Lenin managed to transform all the principles he inherited
from the existing secret terrorist organizations into principles for the communists.
The political economist says that the brutality of the Communist Party has two main sources.
One source is the idea that there exists only one truth.
The truth to prevail.
For the truth to prevail, you have to eliminate everything wrong.
The ideology, according to Xu, is decisive because it gives both justification and legitimacy.
The other part, he says, is about how the Communist Party's structure in practice
There is a tradition to eliminate your political rivals.
So your political rivals become enemies.
So they will not allow for the existence of anyone who is going to disagree.
and today's anti-corruption campaigns as an example of this ruthless continuity.
And Xu warns that the danger is increasing.
He says that China is no longer concealing its strength with a rapid military expansion
and a change to a semi-military economy signals Beijing's intention to exercise power abroad.
Ignoring this means that he can have disastrous consequences.
