The Witch Caves of Zugarramurdi: Myths, Magic, and the Inquisition
The Witch Caves of Zugarramurdi, hidden in the misty foothills of the Navarre region in northern Spain, are steeped in centuries-old legend and fear. Locals tell of a time in the early 17th century when whispers of witchcraft and heresy spread through the valleys, fueled by superstition, famine, and fear of the unknown.
The caves, with their yawning entrances and twisting passages, were said to be gathering places for witches who worshiped the devil under the cover of night. According to the tales, on certain nights—especially during the summer solstice—the caverns echoed with the sounds of unholy rituals: chants in unknown tongues, the pounding of drums, and wild dances illuminated by firelight. Participants were rumored to summon spirits, brew potions from herbs and animal bones, and perform rites to ensure good harvests—or bring ruin to their enemies.
