Angelina Jolie was moved to tears while reflecting on her late mother,
Marceline Bertrand, during the world premiere of her latest film, Couture,
at the Toronto International Film Festival. According to social media video from Entertainment
Weekly, the Oscar winner, whose mother passed at 56 after a battle with cancer, became overcome
with emotion during a Q&A following the screening when she was asked for advice
by someone who recently lost a friend to the disease.
I'm very sorry. I think I will say that one thing I remember my mother saying
when she had cancer, she said to me once when we had a dinner and people were asking her how
she was feeling and she said, all anybody who asks me about is cancer. So I would say,
if you know someone who's going through something, ask them about everything else in their life
as well. You know, they're a whole person and they're still living.
In the upcoming drama, Angelina, who carries the BRCA1 gene,
plays a filmmaker who discovers she has cancer. Ahead of the screening, the actress, who also
underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013 and two years later underwent preventative surgery
to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes, reflected on her family history, which also
includes losing her grandmother and aunt to the disease. Honestly, some of the hardest days were
the loveliest days. The days where I found out my diagnosis in the film, I'm emotional,
and then the rest of the day we're all talking about people we've lost or things we've gone
through and we're hugging each other. As we all do, you go through something hard and sometimes
you appreciate the day. I think that's what the film's also about, that we're going to all go
through difficult things. We're all united in pain and grief and loss and trying to find our
way through and it's giving ourselves that grace and giving each other that
support and bringing it together. It was. I was wearing my mother's necklace.
I was sitting in the chair. It was impossible for me not to think of
when you recreate moments that you share with women that are very generational to you.
I'm 50 now and my mother and grandmother by this age were in chemo.
It's either a choice for all of us. These things we worry about are people we love and it's either
going to make us slow down and almost feel we can't move, take a step, or we're going to make
the most of this life before it's over. The Toronto International Film Festival
runs through September 14th.
