Many of the largest Southeast Asian islands—such as Borneo, Timor, and New Guinea—are split between multiple countries today because of a combination of historical, colonial, geographic, and cultural factors that led to divided sovereignty, rather than unified island states. Colonial Legacy Colonial powers such as the Dutch, British, and Portuguese carved up the islands in the 16th–20th centuries according to their own interests, often disregarding local ethnic or cultural groups.
