There's an invisible line running through the islands of Indonesia, and cross it, and almost everything changes. Tigers, elephants and orangutans on one side. Marsupials, Komodo dragons and cuscuses on the other. And the strait between Bali and Lombok, where it all starts, is small enough that you can see one island from the other.
It wasn't because the people on one side were smarter or worked harder. In this video, I break it down into five reasons: Animals, Crops, Terrain, Location and Metal.
