Composed in 1834 and left unpublished during Chopin’s lifetime, this short but elegant A-flat major Mazurka (B.85) captures the charm and subtlety of the Polish folk dance form. Although it is less well-known than his published Mazurkas, it demonstrates Chopin’s deep affection for his homeland and his ability to blend folk inspiration with poetic sophistication. Although the piece was probably intended for personal or informal use, it bears all the hallmarks of Chopin’s lyrical genius.
