The Change of Seasons = A Change in Strategy
"Most people think of September as back-to-school month, or the start of fall, but in the car business it’s more like the start of the new year. Why? Because automakers are seriously ramping up the push for next year’s models into showrooms, and that is what’s happening right about now. That means the cars on the lot suddenly have a ticking clock attached to them. Every 2025 still sitting there in September is about to be labeled last year’s leftovers. Dealers know it, and manufacturers know it. That’s why you see a flurry of incentives, rebates, and pressure campaigns from the factory all through September."
Model-Year Changeover
"This is the first big reason September is so special: model-year changeover. Automakers traditionally start releasing next year’s models around late summer and early fall. By September, the trucks start arriving, and dealers now have both the old year and the new year sitting side by side. Picture a row of 2025s parked next to the shiny 2026s. Which ones are harder to sell? That’s right — the old ones. Even if they’re identical in every way except the sticker on the window, buyers instinctively want the newer one. Dealers know they have to cut deals to move the leftovers. And when dealers get desperate, you’re the one who wins."
Factory Incentives are also Heating Up
"Model-year changeover isn’t the only factor. September is when manufacturers roll out aggressive incentives to push the current year’s inventory off dealer lots. You’ll see rebates, low APR financing, bonus cash, or special lease offers. These are often stacked on top of whatever the dealer might offer just to get a car off their books.
If you’re a smart buyer, you will use those factory incentives as leverage. The dealer may start by saying, ‘This is the rebate, and that’s all we can do.’ Wrong! That’s just the starting point. Incentives are fuel for your negotiation. In September, there’s more fuel in the tank than almost any other time of year."
