Welcome to our little house. The roof is 17 feet and a half high, it is fixed, but each roof is
on a hinge and then the roof is flat to be able to move along the road.
The first thing that most people comment on is how beautiful the fireplace is. In fact,
when Dani's father saw it for the first time, he asked us if it was for a doll house.
For me it was very important to have a large bathtub because, as you can see,
there is a lot of space to relax. Something that is not seen very often in small houses is a pantry.
Aquila.
Well, make this house our little home.
I'm Zoe and this is Phoenix.
And I am Dani.
Welcome to our little house.
Before living in the little house, we lived in a communal house with a lot of people and
dreamed of moving to a land together and having each one their own little house.
We were the only ones who managed it. We had the opportunity to build it in our parents' front yard
. It has been incredible that Phoenix could see his grandmother and grandfather.
We love the community and the idea of living together,
helping each other and sharing resources.
I learned to build from my father. He is a carpenter and was vice president of a construction company.
We worked together for a long time on a design, we lived many YouTube videos like this,
and we were inspired by the creativity of so many people. The construction process lasted about 8 months.
We moved about four and a half years ago.
It was also really amazing to see Phoenix see his room for the first time because,
you know, he had seen his father build it. He had even helped with small things,
as much as a two-and-a-half-year-old child can do.
I was very open-eyed and very grateful, and I couldn't believe that was his room.
It was the first time I had my own room because when we lived in a community,
I didn't have it. So it was something very important to him.
It is probably the best room I have ever had in my life.
Phoenix, this is your new room, room.
This is my new room.
I can't believe it. This is my new room.
I am proud of the general design and to use as much recycled materials as possible.
And you can use nicer materials because you are not using as much as in a 4,000-square-foot house.
I like to do nice and functional things, and I like to create a cozy living space for a family.
This is our little mansion, as we call it, also called the owl's nest.
It is a 10-foot x 30-ton trailer.
The roof is 17 and a half feet high, but each roof is on a hinge and we can remove each of the three walls and so the roof will be flat and will have 13 and a half feet to circulate on the road.
I wanted to be standing in my loft.
Most of the people I saw were crawling and wanted to be able to stand up, so we did it.
Each roof is on a hinge and then I have panels that can be removed from the roof and the walls, and then there are large and beautiful pins that hold the walls and everything else.
So, we will remove the walls and then transport them in a separate vehicle.
Here are the panels that are removed to access the pins to remove the walls.
And there are several pins on all the walls and on the roof.
So we will unscrew this and then remove the walls and then the roof will be flat for transport.
We chose to use a recycled material for the insulation that has a good R value and we try to be as ecological as possible.
We tried to use as many recycled materials as we could.
All the metal roof and the roof come from a job that my father did that was the wrong color, so he took it home and we reused it.
I like the contrast of cedar and metal.
And I liked making the design of the bird's nest small instead of a straight one.
And all the windows, except two, are recycled or reused.
Each of these panels cost only $ 2 the piece, and I made my own frame for it.
The intention was to lift it, but it became a little heavier than I thought, so now it's just a fixed window.
We wanted a small platform outside, so we made a small terrace and then it is not attached to the house.
The roof can also be removed to transport it.
The trailer came from Tiny House Basics. It was a custom trailer of 10 feet x 30 tons.
It has three axles and can support 21,000 pounds.
It was fun to be inspired by everything that was online and I saw people making shapes with the tiles and I got down to work.
I try to make things beautiful and functional.
We have an Insta water heater that works with propane and the water tank is also down here.
And then we have a 50 amp diffuser. In fact, we have only been using 30 amps and it has gone well.
This was a window of a main door that we reused and my wife wanted it in front and in the center of the bathroom and I think it was really beautiful.
This is another example of one of the easiest works of art to do with tiles.
People do very elaborate things, but this was simple and beautiful.
Well, this is our little house. This is the interior.
The first thing that most people comment on is how beautiful the fireplace is because it is very small.
In fact, when Danny's father saw it for the first time, he asked us if it was for a dollhouse.
It really is very powerful, especially with the fan on.
This is also a really great wood storage.
This was done about a year after we moved here and it is that in reality this was our idea of what we wanted.
We wanted to replicate the hexagonal pattern that we have in the tiles of our kitchen.
And this ended up being free because Danny's father was remodeling a grocery store and there were like 4 of these and they were left over and it turned out that they fit right in the place where we wanted to put our wood warehouse.
This amount of wood will last approximately 2 and a half days and then, once the fire is completely full, it will last approximately 1 hour, hour and a half, which makes it very cold in the mornings.
It is then when, you know, we turn on our little heater that we have while the fireplace heats up.
This is the sofa made as Danny and I built together.
He did all the sawing and I did all the sewing and the stapling and all that kind of stuff that is needed to build a piece of furniture.
We bought a bed in OfferUp that was in someone's guest room and in which they had slept like 3 times and I think it only cost $ 50.
So we bought it and then we shaped it.
It has a storage space underneath that has been useful for thin and long things.
And this is one of our tables, but it is also an instrument.
This is where we keep our himbe drum.
And you know, when we watch movies, we put our little laptop here and then we crouch on the sofa.
One of my favorite things is to sit in this corner and look out the window.
There is a beautiful cedar tree that is right in sight and read a book or have a cup of tea.
It is a very, very comfortable sofa.
You will notice that it has many living edges.
And Danny's brother had a cedar that was a little sick, so he ended up cutting it.
Danny probably spent, I don't know, about 3 days in total without stopping sanding these pieces of living edges
and then covered them with about 40 layers of polyurethane so that they were durable because, you know, cedar is a softer wood.
Actually, at first we intended it to be like a bar,
but we realized that we had built it too high for the stools that exist.
One or two years later, we ended up installing this dining table and I think he bought an old table and restored it.
Every morning I practice yoga.
I lower it to have enough space to do it.
And it also creates space for yoga trapeze.
Basically, it is an interior swing and an incredible toy for Phoenix to release energy and be a beautiful boy.
We thought this would be our home forever.
So, one of the things that was really important to me was to have a really big kitchen and a lot of space for the appliances and to cook.
You know, we didn't have big parties because it's a small house, but when we had people at home, it was great to have all this space.
So it has more than nine feet of space in the pantry, which is very unusual.
And it's also very deep, which is very useful.
A large pizza fits in this oven, and I've roasted chickens there.
It has been a great oven to use as a pantry oven.
It's been amazing.
I also wanted a very large storage space for drawers.
Taking advantage of the corners is something that really interests us in terms of design to be able to take advantage of all the spaces.
And the spaces in the corners are a little funny for that.
So I asked Danny, well, how can we have a sink in the corner?
And he told me, I don't know.
Because you have to be able to align yourself and you don't want to lean too much.
And so he discovered it.
And we got this very large and deep second-use sink again.
And then there's this corner closet that opens and has a weird shape, but it works.
If we ever have to put something under it, we can do it.
Our induction cooker is really great.
Two burners are enough.
Here we have the tea.
And this is usually full of spices.
Something that is not seen much in small houses is a pantry.
Here is the water heater.
We can store tools and appliances.
And here are more shelves and the electric panel.
We chose the medium refrigerator because I love to cook.
But we decided to raise it to have storage space above and below.
Another great feature of this house, which I think was the idea of Danny's brother.
It has many ideas, it is this removable closet.
We put it on a drawer guide and it came out.
Here we come to the stairs, which is also another place where we have a lot of storage space.
And in all the drawers we keep the clothes.
The shelf is also a great place where we have a lot of storage space.
The drawers reach the bottom because we live in a small house.
You can't have a guitar stand on the floor and hold the guitar there.
So Danny built these.
This is a guitar and then this is a Ron Ro, which is a South American instrument.
And that's where we put all our instruments, on the walls.
These windows are two other windows that we found in a second-hand place that Danny framed himself.
He made them beautiful.
The most important thing we had to think about was that when you are, you know,
just below the edge, can you fit without having to crouch?
So the alternate stairs came up as a solution.
This is the main attic.
I think it is almost 8 feet high at its highest point.
From here up, this wall is removed.
And then the same.
From here up, this wall is removed and then the ceiling goes down.
Okay, the next place we're going to go to is Phoenix's bedroom.
But I'm going to talk about the stairs.
Danny made this ladder to size and put the stairs a little closer together
because Phoenix was two and a half years old and his legs were smaller.
It is screwed to the pillars, so it is very, very resistant.
When you go up here, this is where Phoenix's clothes are.
Here is a drawer and these two traps that open.
And this is the only place in the house where you have to crouch.
Everything else is quite high.
So go up.
Okay, this is my son's room and it's about two meters high.
Again, many windows.
I wanted a lot of natural light to come in.
This is another piece of wood that Danny sanded and left beautiful.
And it folds down, although we have never needed to do it.
He always uses it as a desk.
Many times, when I'm in the kitchen, I can hear him playing music up here.
I think that's one of the most beautiful things I appreciate about living in a small house.
There is that intimacy that is generated.
This bed is another part of the particular design that we wanted
so that we could be standing in the bathroom and put our hands comfortably
without the shower being under the headboard.
What Danny did was build the ceiling higher than the bathroom,
the rest of the bathroom ceiling to his bed,
so that when we were standing in the bathroom,
we could have the shower head up and not, you know, so low.
And under his bed.
Many times you find storage space and things like that,
but we thought the other thing would be more important.
Okay, the next place we're going to show you is the bathroom.
We have a door.
It is a sliding door that works wonderfully.
And then, another feature to highlight is another way in which Danny
contributed his beautiful artistic style.
The way he cut the floor so that it would have this edge.
I really thought the bathroom would be my personal care space.
And that's why I wanted it to be beautiful.
I didn't want it to be a small bathroom.
And the way I was able to design it turned out that way.
One of the things I find most beautiful about the house is this window here.
It provides some privacy, but also a lot of beautiful light
and as if the rainbows were made of the beveled edges.
It's really beautiful when the light shines through.
So, now we have the beautiful bathroom area.
Danny just bought boards near Cedro.
He tinned them and made this great Chevron pattern.
Another feature in the bathroom that makes it a really beautiful space.
He cut and, in fact, there is a lot of headroom here.
So that we could have the shower head on our heads.
And then he also made this copper shower curtain bar that surrounds the entire contour.
For me it was very important to have a large bathtub because,
as you can see, there is a lot of space to relax.
In fact, I like it to be a little shorter than most bathtubs
because that means it fills up a little more.
And, of course, from this place I can look out that beautiful window.
The other half of the bathroom, again,
is very well thought out and designed to be our home forever.
We definitely wanted an enzimera sink like this.
We have a composting toilet.
I'm sure everyone knows what a composting toilet is at this point.
I hope so, because it's great to save a lot of water.
At first, the composting toilet took a while to get used to,
but after a while, it became a habit.
Here it is under the phoenix fill.
Basically, this is cut out in that space.
We have connections for a washing machine and dryer combined,
but since we live on the same property as Danny's parents and we just used his,
we were able to use it for storage because it is a really large space.
This is where Danny built a box for our dirty clothes.
All our dirty clothes went there.
A lot of people don't think about where to put dirty clothes in a small house.
So now, after living in this space for four and a half years
and for him to grow up like a magical Jewess,
we were ready to move to something new.
And by selling this house,
we're actually going to get a small savings fund to invest in the land
and also to build another small house.
And this time I think we're going to take a walk around the small house
and we'll let you know when it's finished so you can come and do another one of these.
One of the things I love about living in a small house is the intimacy with our family.
You are forced to spend a lot of time with others
and it has been lovely to see this boy grow and develop.
What I will always remember about living in a small house is the feeling that we achieved it.
Seeing Danny come here every day, see his dedication and how it really inspired me.
It was the first house that was our home.
Thanks for watching this week's episode.
I hope you enjoyed it and see you soon with another tour of a unique house.
