Caspar David Friedrich: Woman Before the Rising or Setting Sun, Part 2

This is the second of two videos exploring Woman before the Rising Sun or … Setting Sun by the nineteenth century German artist Caspar David Friedrich.
Although this painting does not depict an overtly religious motif, we will see how Friedrich’s art fits within a tradition of tradition of meditative sacred art that can be traced back to the very beginnings of Christianity and the visual arts.
Comparing Friedrich’s painting to a fresco from an Early Christian catacomb in Rome, we will see how Friedrich’s art belongs within a tradition of non-narrative expressions of sacred experience.
