This is a newly edited version of a video I first posted as “An Alert Grizzly Almost Detects Me.” I’ve reworked the footage to better capture the moment—and what it felt like to be there.
I spotted this grizzly about 300 yards away across a quiet Yellowstone hillside. At first, it seemed unaware of me—but then it lifted its head, and sniffed the air. Did it smell me?
It wasn’t a close encounter, but it was a powerful reminder of how alert these animals are—and how humbling it is to share space with them.
For those of us a little older, I hope this encourages you to get outside and reconnect with the beauty of God’s creation. It’s never too late to step into the wild.
