This is definitely the worst motorcycle crash and dual sport fail I've ever personally witnessed. My brother and I set out on his first dual sport adventure with high hopes for a fun day. We could not have anticipated just how eventful our first dual sport riding trip together would turn out to be. My brother wanted to get out and put his brand new Hawk 250 Chinese dual sport motorcycle (check them out here: https://amzn.to/33867tZ) to the test. I planned a leisurely trip through the forest for him, checking out some local logging roads together, me on my Suzuki DRZ400S. We stopped to check out a waterfall and as we took off again to keep dual sport exploring, his throttle got stuck open and one of the worst motorcycle crashes I've ever seen happened right next to me. He crashed full throttle into a rock and went flying over the handlebars. Thankfully, he was okay afterward with just a bruised thigh and some damage to the front of his motorcycle to show for his off road motorcycle crash ordeal. Afterward, he felt well enough to keep riding, so we continued on our journey to a hidden forest lake nearby. Along the way, I decided to practice my dual sport wheelies and to my surprise I was able to figure out how to wheelie a dual sport. I was very surprised to see how quickly I learned how to wheelie a dirt bike on this trip!
He's a brand new rider, so we're taking it easy today.
There it is. Beautiful.
Oh-ho-ho-ho!
Baby! We're doing it!
Technically private property, and you're technically not supposed to go down to it,
but I technically don't give a s***.
So here we are at Klickitat Lake.
Whoa, s***!
Oh! You alright? You okay?
Hello everyone, welcome back to the dork side.
I'm the Dork in the Road, and today it is this man, the Chad.
Need a better name than that. Need an internet name.
We have Chadalack.
The Chadalack.
No, the.
Chadalack's first time in the woods on his Hawk 250 Dual Sport.
That's right, everyone. I'm the Dork in the Road, and I want to be your internet riding buddy,
so please consider subscribing. Don't forget to turn on those notifications.
So, Chadalack. I don't think I can say it with a straight face.
Okay.
How do you feel right now?
Feeling good. I like to get my coat jacket on so I'm not getting soaked.
What do you anticipate experiencing today on your first adventure?
I just really want to see what the Hawk can do.
If it's going to make multiple miles or not.
See where that $1,500 bucks goes.
Yeah. Why'd you decide on the Hawk?
Well, I tried to get the bras.
Couldn't get the bras.
Because they were sold out.
So the Hawk, I got a year warranty on the engine and parts,
so I felt pretty good about that, and hopefully she lasts a year.
And for the people that don't know you, how much riding experience do you have?
This will be the first day in the woods.
And how much motorcycle riding experience do you have?
Like 100 miles.
100 miles. Just got his endorsement.
True noob in the woods today.
We're noobin' it.
We're going to crush it.
So we're going to go up this road a couple miles, and then we'll head off into the woods.
I think when we stop and get on the gravel, I'll let you get in front
so that you can set the pace a bit and see how you feel.
And then we'll go out to the lake. Just head to the lake and see how we feel.
And then up to that overlook, and then if we want to explore the roads around, we can.
But it's probably half an hour, 45 minutes to get to that lake.
So we are here near Mary's Peak, Oregon.
That is my brother. That is the Hawk 250.
That is the Chadillac and the Chadillac Cadillac Mobile.
I don't know what the hell he wants to call it.
But we're going to head up here a little ways and then duck off into the woods.
But the point is to get in the woods and let this guy practice some on his new-to-him dual sport.
Or his brand-new dual sport. His first-ever dual sport.
So he's a brand-new rider, so we're taking it easy today.
This is a pretty view when it's not so foggy.
But these roads are dead-end from what I can tell.
I have yet to explore it. I need to at some point.
But we're going to go up a little farther.
So we'll go down here. I don't know. It's 5 or 6 miles to Parker Creek Falls.
But I'll follow you and let you set the pace.
A couple. Let's get the timing down.
That'll give it a little more gas, I think.
That's what I'm afraid of.
This is a cool spot. You guys have seen it before.
But it doesn't get old. It does not get old.
This is Parker Creek Falls. It's flowing less right now.
Although it has been raining.
There it is. Beautiful. Kind of a cool spot.
Look at this big-ass beetle.
You guys see that? Enormous.
Not my friend. I don't want to hang out with you, beetle guy.
Alright. Some entomologist in the comments. Tell me what that is.
Give you a little panorama.
It's a hawk. He's making it.
How do you feel about your purchase?
I mean, it's fun.
Nice.
I feel like I'm going too slow. I don't want to drag you down.
You've got to get comfortable first. That's why I put you in front.
I don't want you to be pushing it more than you're comfortable at the moment.
I'm fine. I'm just practicing my wheelies.
I can see that.
Just practicing getting the front end off the ground a little on purpose.
To get over obstacles.
Whenever I hit a puddle, I'm trying to pop it up over it.
I've never been any good at that.
It's nice if you're going a little slower. I can just put it in first and pop it.
Look at the hawk. Still playing.
We should ruin that. You've got to start riding through some puddles.
Are you going to kickstand turn that? Or are you going to try to do it sitting on it?
I don't know.
Kickstand turns are easier.
Whoa.
Are you alright?
Are you okay?
What happened there?
Are you alright?
Are you okay?
What happened there?
Are you good?
He just scared the s*** out of me.
You may need a new dash cluster.
The handlebars are just bent down.
I don't think I know how bent they are.
You're good though.
That's my major concern here.
We'll give it a sec. Adrenaline is a thing.
So maybe you don't feel it yet.
If you're hurt.
I'll tell you what.
Not lifetime warranted here.
Do you want to sit down for a sec?
Whiskey throttle?
Like I said.
It was clearly going and he didn't want it to.
I don't know if I have a crescent wrench. That would do it.
Probably brute force it.
I saw you in the rear view mirror coming.
I was like, oh he's picking a weird angle.
Oh s*** he's coming kind of fast.
I was about to yell, brake!
Like that would have helped.
We're going to try to get the bars back up.
They're a little bent.
Had a little flipsie.
Yeah I definitely feel it now.
That fricking muscle.
I'm sure you got nailed hard.
Oh yeah. This is easy.
What happened to my headlight?
Well I just got to get my hand on the clutch.
I do reach for the brake but then it moves the throttle too.
Damage report.
How are you feeling?
I'm good.
Are you injured?
Maybe bruised.
Basically he was over there.
Got a little bike start to get away from him.
He at least tried not to hit me which I appreciate.
Straight off into the bushes here and there is a giant rock right there.
So that's what he crashed into.
He went over the handlebars.
So the bars were bent super far back.
I just fixed them thanks to the Suzuki tool kit.
Mirror's toast.
That one's good. I put it back in.
Broken but we'll tighten it down.
Cluster is a little worse for wear.
Took a little brunt right here.
I think some of your wiring might be...
Oh yeah.
Some of your light bulbs are no bueno.
So what do you think?
Do you want to keep riding or do you want to go back?
Yeah I can ride.
He's going to ride it like this.
So we'll take it easy and just make sure nothing's going to rattle apart on you.
The good news is mostly cosmetic from what I can tell.
You definitely scuffed up this front fender but you got to take those stickers off anyway.
So they protected most of it.
Is my light on?
Yeah.
Left is good.
Oh yeah. I know you're both good.
You're both good.
Bright?
Yeah.
I think your dash cluster lights are definitely f***ed.
They didn't work very well anyway.
So um...
Quite the adventure.
Whoa your helmet!
That's no good.
Safety first.
So here we are.
This is...
This is what's happening.
Okay well if you had any questions about the Hawk's durability...
She can take a hit.
She can take a hit. I'll give you that.
But he wants to keep riding so we'll see how we do.
I don't know.
I'd say it's probably rideable but if he...
Just because I don't know what else there is.
But how are you going to know if you don't ride it around and figure it out?
Well...
Rock 1, Chadillac 0 but we're not done yet.
You want that leaf that's stuck to your helmet or...
Okay it just looks cool so I thought maybe you wanted to look awesome.
I mean it definitely looks a lot cooler now.
Battle scarred Hawk.
Kind of crazy.
He's okay but he's definitely hurting a little.
I was not expecting that to happen and it's always those funky...
Starting off, turning around, slow speed stuff that gets you man.
Once you're rolling it's a lot easier.
That'll torpedo your confidence too.
I'm guessing he's going to want to slow down a little today.
Which is perfectly understandable in my opinion.
And we all start somewhere.
But if you had any questions or concerns about...
Whether or not a Hawk 250 can take a hit and keep going...
It sure as hell took a hit.
And it appears to still be going.
There's that big orange gate.
They really don't want us getting around.
I mean I was saying that thing is too clean.
It's not so clean now is it?
There it is!
There I got it!
Oh ho ho ho!
Baby!
We're doing it!
Oh!
Look at that!
I'm doing a wheelie!
So slow speed practice is one thing we can do today.
I'm not covering my brake very well.
Gotta use my brake better.
But damn!
I found her.
If I can get the timing down...
We might be able to get over obstacles a hell of a lot better.
Going forward.
So the DRZ is so torquey even an idiot like me can do a wheelie.
On purpose.
I've been watching a lot of cross training enduro skills videos.
That guy.
Those guys do a great job of explaining the actual skills and how to practice them.
Highly recommend it.
Small practical wheelie video in particular has been very useful for me.
It's a good thing he's wearing gear.
I'll tell you that.
But thigh pads are not something we normally wear.
They don't usually take a handlebar in the thigh either though.
In my experience.
It's pretty out here though.
It's good to be out in the woods no matter what the circumstances.
There's a lot of guys shooting today.
Very popular spot right here.
There it is.
A little view spot.
Okay.
Quite a trench right there.
Probably not getting over that.
Lots of people shooting up here.
Better hope they have good backstops.
Let's hope there's a decent backstop.
Lots of shooting.
He's accelerating.
I can't imagine why.
That was very close.
They're right off the road doing that.
Wheelie like it.
I wheelie like doing that.
You let the engine do it.
You don't have to pull up.
It's not a BMX bike.
Maybe.
That might be it.
What is that?
Hawk?
There's a really large tree that fell down at one point.
It's actually hard to steer when your front wheel is off the ground.
It turns out.
I read that on the internet.
Cool.
We're about to get real viewy up in here.
There you go.
You're into the views now.
Pretty, right?
I mean it's a clear cut, but you can see for a ways.
And that's what matters.
We're going to get to that lake and it's Saturday, so I hope there's not a bunch of people there.
Technically private property and you're technically not supposed to go down to it.
But I technically don't give a ****.
Blackberries.
They actually grab back when you try to kick them.
Practical wheelie.
Very small.
But you know what?
Baby steps.
I might be able to get over a tree or something now if I needed to.
And that is important skills to have for trail riding and exploring abandoned ass roads with trees falling across them all the time.
That's it.
Oh yeah.
We're doing wheelies, you guys.
We're doing wheelies.
That's what we're doing is wheelies.
Just for the record.
I don't know if you saw.
We're doing wheelies.
Whoa.
I just scared the **** out of myself.
So that's fun.
I never thought this day would come.
Engine only.
The **** lake is right up here.
I'm pretty sure this is the clear cut that it's in.
Yeah, it is.
Wheeling over that **** tree.
It's higher than last time.
It's a momentous day.
You had your first big crash and I **** learned how to wheelie.
A little.
We're here.
The Hawk made it.
We're here at Klickitat Lake.
Gonna walk down to the water.
Show you what that's all about.
There's a little trail.
Whoa.
Okay.
It's a little slippery.
I'm fully geared up though.
So it doesn't matter.
Be interesting to get a kayak or something out on it.
So here we are at Klickitat Lake.
My brother survived.
So that's good.
A little sore.
My biceps are sore from screwing around doing all those wheelies.
Which means I'm doing it wrong.
Bad technique.
You can't pull a motorcycle up in the air.
Especially when you're sitting on it.
Gotta let the throttle do it.
Which is what I'm discovering.
So I'm trying to do it.
Good progress so far.
So good.
No fatalities.
So far.
No fatalities so far.
You want me to show you how to kickstand turn?
It's very helpful.
Bring this full lock so it doesn't wobble on you.
Grab the bike here and just pull it up onto the kickstand.
See?
Then you can just rotate it.
But all the weight's on the kickstand.
All you have to do is balance it.
I used to turn the Versys around like that.
Even.
But when you get into a tight road and you can't get turned around easily.
It's like cheating.
You know why you crashed?
There's no Dork in the Road sticker on that bike.
Alright.
We'll all lead.
But I'll take it easy.
Here we go.
This is all zipped up.
We're going to go to the top of the mountain and have a refreshing beverage.
It'll be good stuff.
Excellent!
Take one.
Wheelie time.
