Does the Bible give us insight into the origins of sickness and disease? What is God's will concerning healing? Pastor Christine dives into these questions and more in today's episode
Hi everyone, this is Pastor Christine Miller here, and I have some things that I really
want to share with you today that have been in my heart that can be a blessing and a help
to you or somebody that you know.
You know, I'm not just in the ministry, but I'm also a registered nurse, and in my lifetime
working as a nurse, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to sickness
and disease.
You know, I think people long to be healthy and healed almost more than anything else
on earth.
You can have a lot of money, but if you're sick in your body, if you've got pain, if
you're immobilized, then you're not enjoying life.
And so today, I want to talk about this topic of where does sickness and disease come from
anyway?
Now, some of you watching, you already know the answer to that, but you'd be surprised
how many people in our world have no idea where sickness and disease come from.
And so, they're born into a world that's already cursed and full of disease.
They just assume this is the way life has to be.
They put up with it.
They tolerate it.
They suffer miserably from it.
And some of us have been more fortunate than others in that we didn't have a sickly childhood,
or we lived most of our lives without sickness or pain.
But there are many, I'm sure of this, many watching, or many that you even know of that
you can refer to this episode, that are suffering from sickness and disease, and they would
like this answer.
Because you see, if we can determine where does it come from, then after that, we can
look at how to deal with it and how to get rid of it.
So I'm going to share some scriptures with you today that I believe are going to be a
blessing to you, and they're going to clear some things up for you.
You know, Jesus said in the book of John chapter 10 and verse 10, he said, the thief does not
come except to steal and to kill and to destroy.
But then he went on to say this, but I have come that they may have life and that they
may have it more abundantly.
So we get a big answer here in this scripture.
Anything that steals, anything that kills, anything that destroys is of the thief.
Or we could say it this way, it is of the devil.
Satan is our enemy.
He's the enemy of God, and he hates anything that God loves.
And of course, God loves the human race.
He loves people.
He's created us so that he can have a relationship with us and have a family.
And so Satan has come to steal from us.
He's come to kill.
He's come to destroy.
Well, I can't think of anything more than sickness and disease that steals from people.
You know, think about how much money is spent every year just on improving health.
And then of course, many people die before the time because the sickness and disease
ravages their bodies.
And so that's not enjoying life.
And then destroying, I mean, people have their health destroyed.
They have relationships destroyed.
Their finances get destroyed.
So we see that the thief, his main intention is always to destroy human lives.
But Jesus said, hey, I'm contrasting the works of God with the works of Satan.
This is what Satan has to offer.
But look what I've come to do.
I've come to abolish those works.
I've come to give you an abundant life.
I like it also from the Amplified Classic Translation.
Jesus said, I have come that they may have and enjoy life.
I like that expansion there saying, enjoy life.
If you're diseased, you're not enjoying life.
And then he said, and have it in abundance to the full till it overflows.
Well, Jesus is saying the devil comes to steal.
He comes to put disease.
I've come to give you a good life, a life that you can enjoy.
And thank God, one of the reasons Jesus came was to reveal the will of the Father to us.
So when we study the life of Jesus in the Gospels,
what we're really doing is we're seeing the will of God in action.
And I would just challenge you, if you have a Bible or if you don't, I would get one.
Start reading through the Gospels, which are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
And you will find that there has never been one place in those Gospels
where Jesus said, it's not my will to heal you today.
Or where Jesus said, I'm sorry, but you can't be healed today.
This is not for you today.
As a matter of fact, sincere people that were hungry for truth and
they were desperate for answers.
They would come to Jesus and they would beseech him, oftentimes beg him.
Sometimes, I know there's a story of a woman with an issue of blood who had been
bleeding for 12 long years.
And she literally crawled through a crowd to get to Jesus just to touch the hem of
his garment because she was desperate for a healing.
She heard that Jesus was healing people.
She believed that it would be working in her life if she could reach him.
And so she got out of her comfort zone and she went.
And you know what?
Jesus never turned around to anybody and said, sorry, can't heal you today.
I'm sorry, I'm out of healing power today.
I'm sorry, God doesn't want to bless you today.
No, we never find one instance where Jesus turned anybody away.
Well, this reveals the beautiful nature and
character of our Father because Jesus said, I come to do the will of my Father.
So when we see Jesus in action, we're seeing the will of the Father,
our Father God.
So we see that he's compassionate toward people.
He's not willing that any should perish,
which really sickness and disease would cause you to perish.
And he's not willing that any should be sick or diseased.
So it's just such a beautiful picture of the love of the Father for people.
You know, God loves people.
He's for us.
He's not against us.
And contrary to what we're seeing in our world today,
there is love of this sort available for us.
You know, today we see so much hatred, so much slander, so much anger in our world.
We see people that are vindictive, that are really wishing harm on their enemies.
Well, God's never even wished one ounce of harm on his enemies.
He is love, the Bible says, and he wants people well.
Now we see another scripture here that reveals the character and
the nature of God and the will of the Father.
In the book of Acts chapter 10 and verse 38, it says how God anointed
Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.
Who went about doing good and healing.
So here we see tied together the words good and healing.
That means healing is a good thing.
And not only that, it says he healed all those
that were oppressed of the devil for God was with him.
So not only does the scripture show us that healing is a good thing,
not only does it show us that it's the will of God, but
this also shows us that everybody that was healed under the ministry of Jesus
was actually oppressed by the devil.
Now remember, we're talking about where does sickness and disease come from?
Well, according to this scripture, it comes from the devil.
And Jesus came to undo the works of the devil or do the opposite of the devil.
So the devil has something to do with sickness and disease.
And if you've had sickness or disease, you have to treat it like it's an enemy.
Don't buddy up with it, don't pet it.
Obviously, we try to protect ourselves, we try to heal,
we try to rest or do whatever we can to relieve the symptoms.
And all of that is good and fine, but
we have to get an attitude towards sickness and disease that I hate this.
It's of the devil, the devil's my enemy, therefore sickness and
disease are my enemies.
And then when you get that kind of fortitude,
you will actually use your authority over it.
Now, in the same manner that sickness and disease is not from God,
I just want to take a little tangent here and explain to you something else.
That so many times people want to blame God for things like natural disasters.
Some people blame God when they're sick.
Some people blame God when things don't go well in their life.
It's interesting how he gets a lot of blame but
very little praise when things go well.
It's human nature to try to take the credit for
when things go well but then blame God when it goes poorly.
But some people will actually blame God for things like earthquakes,
tornadoes, storms, accidents.
Why did you let this happen to my child, God?
There are certain laws that govern our world today.
And many people are unaware of these things.
And so I just want to explain something to you, in case you didn't know this,
that in the beginning, in the Garden of Eden, everything was perfect.
There was no sickness or disease, there were no accidents, there were no disasters.
And then if we go to the back of the Bible, we find out that in heaven,
there is no sickness or disease or accidents or disasters.
So what we're seeing is in the Garden of Eden before the fall of Adam, and
then in heaven after this age is over with on Earth,
the perfect will of the Father is exhibited.
It's a world without tragedy, a world without sorrow, a world without pain.
And because humans on this Earth have only known sorrow and disaster,
we have developed a tolerance for it.
We've developed coping abilities to deal with it.
But so many people don't understand this, that God's made a way for
us while we're here on Earth to not have to live with these things.
So natural disasters are often attributed to God, and
even insurance policies will label things acts of God.
But I want to emphatically state that God is not responsible for those things.
They're acts of Satan, not acts of God.
And these things all came into existence after Adam sinned against God and
basically turned his authority over the Earth to Satan, who is the enemy of God.
And we can see, by the way,
things are operating in our Earth today that Satan is a very poor Lord.
He is just bringing tragedy upon people day after day.
So we don't want to attribute these things to God.
As a matter of fact, we have a perfect example in the New Testament where Jesus
did not cause a storm, but he actually rebuked a storm.
We have the story of how he and the disciples were in a boat.
A storm of hurricane proportion arose, and
the disciples who were seasoned fishermen began to get afraid.
They woke up Jesus and said, Jesus, don't you care that we're perishing?
So the winds are blowing, the boat is tossing back and forth violently.
And Jesus gets up, and he rebukes the wind, and
he commands the sea to be calm and still.
Now, I just want to pose a question to you.
If that storm was caused by God,
then why would Jesus oppose the will of God and rebuke it?
So you can see here, the storm was not caused by God because then Jesus would
have just allowed it to continue and maybe say something like, well,
God's trying to work something out in our lives today.
But that storm was not caused by God any more than sickness and
disease are brought on by God.
And so it's important that we establish these truths.
God is good.
He doesn't contradict himself.
Now, we're gonna look at another scripture here where Jesus actually gives
instructions to the church to heal the sick.
And it's interesting with this scripture to note this,
that if God's will was not always to heal,
then this passage I'm about to read would really bring a lot of confusion into
people's lives.
But in Mark chapter 16, we call this the Great Commission.
In verse 15, Jesus said to his disciples,
go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
That means every person, everybody, everywhere.
Not just if they decide they want to hear it.
And why? Because this is their rescue.
And then verse 16, he who believes and is baptized will be saved,
which that word can also be translated healed or made whole.
But he who does not believe will be condemned.
And these signs shall follow those who believe.
In my name, they will cast out demons.
They will speak with new tongues.
They will take up serpents.
And if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them.
Now there's a good scripture to stand on if you get food poisoning.
And then the last part says this.
They will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.
Now notice it doesn't say they'll lay hands on the sick if it's the will of God.
Or they'll lay hands on the sick and some will recover some of the time.
No, it says they will recover.
They emphatically will recover.
Now Jesus gave these instructions to the church and
obviously it's representing the will of the father that all be healed or
he would not have given a big statement like this to just heal all that are sick.
And then one other scripture that I think is a good one for
us to look at is James chapter five.
In verse 13, it says, is anyone sick among you?
Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him,
anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer of faith will save the sick.
That word save means heal.
It will heal the sick and the Lord will raise him up.
And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
So I love this passage because again,
it's not saying the prayer of faith might heal the sick some of the time.
It's a clean statement that lets us know all the time, all the time the prayer of faith.
Now that's a key though.
You've got to pray in faith believing that it will work.
So we see again this word save, which is from the Greek word sozo,
also means to heal, to preserve, to make whole.
We see from these few scriptures, and there are so many more, but
we're in a limited time period here to teach this.
We see Jesus' attitude towards sickness and disease.
He did not tolerate it.
He hated it.
He had compassion on those that were sick.
And he healed the sick everywhere he went where they would believe him.
And so I just want to encourage you today, know that sickness is your enemy.
Know that it's of Satan and not of God.
And open up your heart to receive healing if you need it.
I want to pray with you right now if you need healing in your body.
Heavenly Father, I pray for those that are watching that need healing in their bodies,
if they need a miracle or just a healing.
In the name of Jesus, I speak the word of God over you and
I command sickness and disease to depart from your body.
And I speak life and health to you.
And I thank you, Father, that your healing power is flowing into them now from
the top of their heads to the soles of their feet and making them every bit whole.
And Lord, we are careful to give you the glory and the honor and
the praise for all that you're doing in their lives in Jesus' name.
Now, if you prayed that prayer and received that healing power into your body and
you notice a change, we want to hear from you.
So make sure that you write to us and let us know that you received a healing.
