We sometimes forget that trees are also medicinal and magic as we are so busy looking after our herb beds. Most trees are magical and have some medicinal qualities and we must not overlook that or we will leave ourselves short. Cramp Bark or Guelder Rose is an exceptional tree in terms of medicinal actions. This tree is medicinal for the female reproductive system, for the nervous system, for muscular system, for the circulatory system and more. Virburnum opulus or Cramp Bark is a tree that should be in everyone's garden. As the modern name, Cramp Brark, suggests, the medicine relieves cramps or spasms. On a magical or energetic level, this tree can soften rigidity in the body and in the mind and lead to a more relaxed way of being. The bark is the part of the tree that is used and please remember to NEVER take bark from the trunk of any tree, use the branches only.
Following my video about Willow, • Natural Pain Relief - Willow , someone kindly suggested using a potato peeler as an easier and safer way to remove the bark and it certainly is! Thank you!

Here are the instructions for making medicine with Cramp Bark.
1) Collect some fallen branches or cut some small branches and peel off the bark with a potato peeler. This bark can be dried and kept for tea.
2) If making a tea, the bark must be decocted. This means placing it in a pan and covering with water. Bring to a boil and then simmer gently for about 15 minutes. Strain and drink whenever you have cramp or spasm anywhere in the body or it is on going, take three cups per day.
3) To make a tincture - this is infusing in alcohol or Apple Cider Vinegar - have a look here for directions - • Making Tinctures - 3 Easy Steps! Allow to infuse for 6 weeks and then strain out the bark and place in a dark bottle, label.
4) I am also making a decocted tincture here by blending the two methods outlined above. First decoct the bark. Pour off the water to half fill a clean jar. Strain away the rest of the liquid. Put the bark into the jar along with the tea and then cover to the brim with alcohol. This method ensures that all the constituents - water soluble and alcohol soluble - are extracted. Allow to infuse for 6 weeks and then strain out the bark.

Just recently I have received emails from people with recent news about animals self-medicating with plants - you might be interested.
