As the Fellowship flees through the dark mines of Moria, they are attacked by orcs and a monstrous creature known as the Balrog. They reach the narrow Bridge of Khazad-dûm, where Gandalf bravely faces the Balrog. He shouts, “You shall not pass!” and breaks the bridge, causing the Balrog to fall. However, the demon’s whip drags Gandalf down with it. With his last breath, he tells the Fellowship, “Fly, you fools!” They escape, devastated by the loss of their leader.
