Rail Track Demolition with a massive 100-Tonne Excavator

When the ground in the city of Bern or Zürich shakes, it's usually not caused by an earthquake but more likely by one of Eberhard's massive 100-Tonne Demolition Excavators, like the Cat 395F L UHD.

In cities like Bern and Zürich, with an extensive and heavily used urban rail network, it's necessary, after a period of roughly 20 - 30 years to renovate the rail network and replace the old, worn-down rails and track foundations. The most spectacular part of this process is undoubtedly the removal of the old rails and foundations.

There's not better machine for this purpose than Eberhard's Cat 395F L UHD Demolition Excavator. In order to maximize stability and tear-out force, the Cat 395F is equipped with its short boom configuration and a special front attachment with an integrated hydraulic shear, which is designed to peel the rails off of the old foundations and to remove the concrete. The hydraulic shear, which is installed at the front of the tool, is activated by the operator, to cut the rails into smaller, manageable pieces in the same process. An operating weight of 100 Tonnes, combined with 391 kW and 532 hp of the Cat C18 diesel engine, that drive the hydraulic pumps, translates into the traction and force required to remove the rails and foundations efficiently. The undercarriage's ground clearance of 0.71 meters is a big advantage to work and maneuver on demolition sites like these.

Since such construction sites are often located in the middle of the city and affect several railroad lines and connections, time is of the essence. Therefore, as many machines and construction workers as necessary are usually deployed, to ensure that the work from demolition to the construction of the new tracks is reduced to a minimum and that public transportation is running again as quickly as possible. Most of the time, these works, which focus on specific sections of the rail network, are carried out overnight or over a period of one to two days. To accelerate the construction of the new track foundations, a special fast - hardening concrete is used.
