The Boastful Turtle and the Hungry Crocodile
Once upon a time, in a lush, green jungle by a calm river, lived a turtle named Tito.
Tito was not an ordinary turtle. At least, that's what he believed.
He had a strong, shiny shell, and he was very proud of it.
Every day, Tito would waddle around the forest paths, boasting to every animal he met,
Look at my shell! It's the strongest in the whole jungle!
Nothing can break it! he'd shout, puffing out his chest.
The monkeys rolled their eyes. The parrots flew away to avoid him.
Even the sleepy sloths tried to nap elsewhere.
One sunny afternoon, Tito spotted someone new, an enormous crocodile named Koro,
basking by the riverbank. Koro hadn't eaten in days, and his belly grumbled like thunder.
Tito, full of pride, marched right up to the crocodile.
Hey, Koro! Bet you've never seen a shell this strong! Tito broomed.
Your teeth couldn't even scratch it!
Koro's eyes opened slowly, gleaming with mischief.
Oh, really? he said, licking his lips. Why don't we have a little challenge,
my strong-shelled friend? Let's see what's tougher, your shell or my teeth!
Tito's eyes sparkled with excitement. No one had ever dared challenge him before.
You're on! he said without thinking. Great! Koro grinned.
Just walk right into my mouth so I can test your shell!
Without a second thought, Tito clumsily marched into the crocodile's wide-open jaws.
Snap! Koro bit down with all his might.
But instead of crunching the turtle like a snack, he winced in pain.
Tito's shell was strong, but that wasn't all. In that moment, Tito realized something.
This isn't a challenge, he thought. He's trying to eat me!
With a loud crack, Tito clamped down hard on Koro's tongue with his sharp beak.
Yow! the crocodile roared, flinging his mouth open in pain.
Tito went flying through the air and landed with a splash in the river.
Without waiting a second, he paddled as fast as his little legs could go,
deeper into the reeds where Koro couldn't reach.
From that day on, Tito stopped bragging about his shell.
He still had the strongest one around, sure.
But now he was a little wiser and a lot more humble.
And the crocodile?
Well, let's just say he never tried to eat another turtle again.
Good night!
