Johannes Brahms had completed his 21 Hungarian Dances by 1879, and they remain one of his most popular collections of music to this day. All of the dances are based on traditional Hungarian folk tunes and range in duration from around 1 minute to 6 minutes. While some of the dances are more well-known than others, as a set they are a force to be reckoned with. In this 21-part 'Explore Hungarian Dances' series on ClassicalExBurns, we will delve into the ins and outs of this famous collection.

The sixteenth dance, the last of the third set of Hungarian Dances, is primarily set in F minor. The rich string opening is broad and lyrical, with the woodwind used to decorate the main theme. Although the opening is in F minor, the music soon bursts into F major when Brahms changes the marking to 'Presto'. The fast tempo allows Brahms to create intricate orchestrations, with the woodwind interweaving their lines with the strings. A short recapitulation of the opening theme returns before the music runs off again, ending this dance with excitement and joy.

It was a lovely winter's day. There was lots of untouched, fresh snow, and the landscape was like something from a winter wonderland. Many people were outside marvelling at the winter wonderland. We were lucky enough to be among them. This video was filmed in the Diemtigtal Valley in Switzerland by Simone Schlegel and edited by Wenjing Ma.
