Happy Thanksgiving To All In The USA And To Those Of You Worldwide As You Celebrate Your Days Of Thanks!

First, Let's Visit Plymouth, Massachusetts and see how they celebrated the first Thanksgiving in America. Every year, they have a parade showing the costumes and the celebrations of Thanksgiving from 1620 to the present time.

A 17th century village is re-created along the shores of the Plymouth Harbor. They dress in actual Pilgrim costumes plus they also celebrate the Indian Homesite. They actually created a full Wampanoag Homesite just as the Indians lived in. However, visitors are not allowed to dress in Indian costumes and must change if they do.

They even have a meal made up of the exact foods used on the first Thanksgiving. Such as deer, wildfowl, corn in the form of porridge, and many fruits and vegetables like pumpkins, squash, and corn which were introduced to the Pilgrims by the Indians.

Next We Will Hop On A Plane And Visit Holland

After the Pilgrims left England to escape the Anglican church; they stopped in Leiden, Netherlands. They actually lived there and raised their families there from 1609 to 1620 before they came to America. Every year a representative of the United States flies over there and speaks to the people on Thanksgiving. Nine of the US Presidents actually are descendants of Leiden Pilgrims including President Obama.

Next, We Will Hop Back On The Plane And Visit England

In Britain, they like to celebrate successful harvests. One harvest called "Harvest Home" is celebrated on a Sunday nearest the Harvest Moon. This is when the full moon closest to the Autumn Equinox appears. They celebrate by singing, dancing, and playing games.

They also celebrate the Harvest Of The Sea Thanksgiving in many towns in England. These festivals arose in many fishing towns where the people made their living as fishermen.

We Are Going To Hop Back On The Plane And Visit Israel

In Israel, they celebrate the Sukkot Festival or Feast Of Tabernacles. They build a three-sided hut called a Sukkah and live in it for a week. It is a reminder about the structures the Israelites lived in during the harvest. They take a portion of the harvest to the temple in Jerusalem in thanks to God for a successful harvest.

Why Not Hop Back On The Plane And Fly To Greece Next!

The sun shines brightly almost every day in Greece. Their Thanksgiving is called Thesmophoria. The ancient Greeks wished to thank Thesmophoros (Demeter) Goddess of Harvest and Agriculture for a successful harvest. The festival Thesmophoria, is held in the fall. It occurs between October and November. Thesmophoria honors the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone.

The festival was born because of a mother’s love for her daughter. Demeter was upset because of her daughter’s captivity in the Underworld. This time of upset for Demeter was the time of summer in Greece when the fields are dry and shriveling from the hot summer sun and drought. Demeter presided over grains and the fertility of the earth. Thus, the first Thanksgiving, in fact, took in place in Greece. Demeter was also known as the Corn Goddess.

Our Last Stop Will Be Barbados In The Caribbean

The Crop Over Festival is a 3-month long festival of Barbadian music, arts, food, culture, flower festivals, calypso dancing, etc. The Crop Over celebration recalls the colonial past when sugar cane was king. The finale of Crop Over’s events makes this the island’s most exciting day of the year. This day is in August of each year.

Barbados ends the festivities with a grand carnival parade know as Kadooment Day, known as the biggest and sweetest carnival to end the Caribbean’s carnival season.

They have masquerade balls and dress in sequin costumes, colorful feathers, jewels, and bright accents. There are countless international celebrities, including their very own megastar, Rihanna. The party continues well into the night with more music, food, and fireworks, set against the picturesque backdrop of Brighton beach.
