Hi everyone and welcome to Everyday English Talk. I'm Lily.
Today, Tom and Anna are going to chat about their routines.
What they do in the morning, afternoon, evening and on the weekend.
After each part, I'll explain some useful English phrases.
Let's get started.
Hey Anna, are you a morning person?
Definitely not.
I usually wake up around 7 o'clock but I stay in bed for a few minutes scrolling on my phone.
Same here. I hit the snooze button at least twice.
Then I get up, brush my teeth and take a quick shower.
I make a cup of tea and grab a quick bite before leaving the house.
No time for a big breakfast.
I'm always running late. I just wash my face, throw on some clothes and rush out the door.
Let's look at some useful words and phrases from the morning routine.
1. Scroll on my phone.
1. Look through your phone, usually on social media or messages.
2. Hit the snooze button.
Delay waking up by pressing the button on your alarm.
3. Grab a quick bite.
Eat something small and fast.
4. Throw on clothes.
Put on clothes quickly without thinking too much.
5. Rush out the door.
Leave the house quickly because you're late.
OK. Now let's see what they do in the afternoon.
My afternoons are always busy.
After class, I go grab lunch with friends.
After that, I head to the library to study or finish some assignments.
It's quiet there.
Nice. I usually pack my own lunch but sometimes I order food online.
I sometimes take a power nap if I'm really tired.
Just 20 minutes does the trick.
That sounds good. I always get sleepy around 3 p.m.
Now let's review the new phrases from the afternoon routine.
1. Grab lunch, a casual way to say eat lunch.
2. Pack my own lunch. Prepare and bring food from home.
3. Order food online. Use an app to get food delivered.
4. Head to the library.
Go to the library.
5. Take a power nap.
Sleep for a short time to feel more energetic.
Let's move on to the evening routine.
Evenings are my favorite.
After dinner, I like to relax and watch a series on Netflix.
I sometimes call my parents or text my friends to catch up.
I usually do some chores like washing the dishes or cleaning my room.
I try to avoid my phone before bed.
I read a book instead.
It helps me fall asleep faster.
I go to bed around 10.30. What about you?
Midnight usually. I'm a night owl.
Here are some useful phrases from their night routine.
1. Do chores. Small jobs at home like cleaning or washing dishes.
2. Catch up with someone.
Talk to someone you haven't spoken to in a while.
3. Fall asleep. Start sleeping.
4. Night owl. A person who stays up late.
5. Relax and watch a series.
Chill and enjoy a show on TV or online.
Now, let's hear about their weekend routine.
I love weekends. I sleep in and have a big breakfast.
I go for a walk in the park or sometimes play football with my cousins.
And I try to finish homework before Sunday night.
Doesn't always happen though.
Me too. I usually hang out with my friends or go shopping.
On Sundays, I like to stay home and binge watch my favorite series.
Here's the final vocabulary list from their weekend talk.
1. Sleep in. Wake up later than usual.
2. Hang out with friends.
Spend time relaxing with friends.
3. Go for a walk. Take a walk for fun or exercise.
4. Binge watch. Watch many episodes of a show in one sitting.
5. Doesn't always happen.
A funny way to say something you try to do but don't always succeed in.
That's it for today's episode.
