Now We Are Going to Visit Iceland.
Icelandic National Day is an annual holiday in Iceland. It represents the founding of The Republic of Iceland on June 17, 1944. This date also marks the end of Iceland's centuries-old ties with Denmark. This date was chosen as it was the birthday of Jón Sigurdsson, the leader of the 19th-century Icelandic independence movement. Denmark was still occupied by Germany when Iceland took over its independence. King Christian X sent a letter on 17 June 1944 congratulating Icelanders on the establishment of a republic. Mr. Sveinn Bjornson became the first President of Iceland.
Today, Icelanders celebrate this holiday with a parade through every area with a brass band. Riders on Icelandic horses often start before the brass band and flag bearers from the Icelandic scout movement traditionally follow the brass band.
After the parade speeches are held out in the open, including one from Fjallkonan (the woman of the mountain), who recites a poem. She represents the fierce spirit of the Icelandic nation and Icelandic nature. After speeches and other ceremonies are over, less formal celebrations usually musical events.

There are special events held on Independence Day: The celebrations begin as the parade commander arrives on Republic Square. He then orders the parade to stand at ease, and the Presidential Fanfare is sounded as he then delivers a holiday speech to the troops.
