Well, if you haven't adopted a pet before,
Deakin Humane Society has everything you need to know.
22 News reporter, Sarah Bien-Aimé shows
how they say you can best prepare
to welcome a furry friend.
Many people enter the doors of Deakin Humane Society
looking for companionship, emotional support,
or just pure joy with a goal to go home with a new pet.
Well, our adoption team is super.
They want what we all want.
They want a really good match between a pet and a person.
Before adopting a pet,
staff say you should consider a number of things,
like your lifestyle, your time commitment,
and your expenses.
Oftentimes, homeowners have an easier adoption process.
If you rent, you're gonna possibly have restrictions,
either no pets or maybe small pets
or pets that have a weight restriction.
And if you are the primary pet owner,
it's important to think of what it takes
to care for an animal.
They need your care, your attention, and resources,
meaning, you know, the usual staples like food
and, you know, a nice bed maybe, some toys.
Adopting is all about making sacrifices
to blend your family.
Cats can live 15 to 20 years, dogs 10 to 15.
And you wanna think about, you know,
how old are my kids gonna be
when this dog is eight or nine years old?
Are they gonna be off to college
or their own apartment somewhere?
Who's gonna take care of this pet as they age?
After several considerations,
research, and bonding time with that animal,
staff say you could have a pet to call yours right away.
Working for you, Sarah Bien-Aime, 22 News.
