EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS | Man City 3-2 Liverpool | CITY through after five-goal classic
So the Blues are back in action once again and after almost six weeks of domestic inactivity
what a match on which to refocus after the Qatar World Cup. City's recent tussles with Liverpool
have been monumental and tonight the prize is a place in the quarterfinal of a competition
which has been won by these two clubs more than any other. But with 17 league cups between them
this is a duel which should have been a fitting final perhaps as it is it is just one of these
great sides who will make it to the quarterfinal stage of a competition that they both adore.
And Haaland is already through on goal and he scooped a chip over the top of the goalkeeper
over the top of the net but that is a positive sign Andy Morrison. Absolutely just a finish
Now City are through here because Haaland will get to it he's not offside
into the box he goes and City will score no! Oh it's an incredible miss by Cole Palmer.
Oh he's just got his feet all wrong but his feet are wrong it's an unbelievable opportunity
he just opens his foot up and he's just got his feet wrong. Gundogan now scampering into the final third
he plays it out wide and the return goes to De Bruyne. De Bruyne in a crossing position
Haaland scores! From City brilliant finish from Haaland. De Bruyne to Haaland it's becoming
a cliche because it's happening time and time again. Well we're going to watch it but I cannot
tell you how good this movement is from Haaland. As a defender you want to be able to see you want
to be able to feel your striker but his movement and his timing is incredible again this movement
from Haaland is absolutely textbook. Matic now advancing into City territory has a couple of
targets and in the box is Milner this is good by Liverpool and they've equalised brilliant goal
wonderfully worked and put in by Carvalho and Liverpool weren't behind for long it's City won
Liverpool won and you have to say that the tempo of this match you just anticipated there'd be more
goals. It's with Akanji, Akanji under pressure plays a ball forward Mahrez helps it on
De Bruyne's onto it now then City two on one can they finish De Bruyne and Gundogan good save by
Kelleher goes out for a corner great chance for Gundogan good save by Kelleher. A great flick
Mahrez puts in and then he's clear now Haaland makes two movements really which create the space
for Gundogan and then as in the keeper called a great save what can we say. Lewis now with a
lot of Liverpool players coming towards him still finds De Bruyne, De Bruyne puts in the cross
Hake! With a save brilliant ball from De Bruyne and Kelleher has keeping Liverpool in the tie.
We can't call it a brilliant ball because there's only like one man on the planet can play that ball
to get the curvature on it and the pace on the ball absolutely perfection is incredible bit of
Matip advancing goes to the halfway line and lays it out to the right hand side and the ball scooped
in by Gomez Nunez is onside he's through on goal can he get the shot in well he did but it was well
off target City are looking for an offside flag that never came and Nunez has missed a really
good opportunity to put Liverpool in front. City have got the ball with Rodri in central midfield
he plays it out wide to Mahrez, Mahrez is on to it Mahrez hits it that is a magnificent goal
Riyad Mahrez with an absolutely magnificent finish he took the ball down moved inside found a half a
yard of space and bent it into the far corner he opened the scoring against Chelsea in round three
he's given the City the lead in round four against Liverpool. It's a fabulous finish and it's all
about the first touch it's all about his move he takes it on the half volley with the outside of
his foot and that just nullifies Robertson you then need to finish but it's the touch this touch
is just a different level you can't defend against that. One movement he's taken the ball inside
Robertson the left fullback and guided it because so much of the goal was open to him and he bent
it in that far corner and I guess Andy that's the reason why so often right footers play on the left
I'll just pause you now because Nunez is on to a through ball Nunez through on goal
Salah equalises Liverpool are level within seconds it was a counter-attack Nunez darted down played
it into the middle and Salah put it into the back of the net well the last two times these two sides
played in the Premier League here they ended in 2-2 draws and both times Liverpool came from behind
to do so and they've done it again they're probably not chance to even stop and talk about
the quality of Morrison and it's just down the side it's a great turn of pace and it's a touch
unfortunate but it just falls there Salah just pulls in just checks his stride and Aki just
keeps running and then he can't change direction and he just steers it and that's not as easy as
it looks I know it's stately obvious but you still have to compose yourself and pass it into an empty
net. Palmer outside to De Bruyne, De Bruyne gets onto the ball it bounces off Gomez goes out for a
City corner wide on the left hand side plays it short to Palmer, Palmer goes back to De Bruyne
De Bruyne looks up scoops in a ball Aki City Nathan Aki restores City's lead fantastic be
inventive be inventive on your corners and do things occasionally quick Liverpool don't get
set they manage to get two on the ball and it's so simple it's a simple pass from De Bruyne
he receives the ball back and then just bends it into an area again we always talk about De
Bruyne don't pick a player out put it into an area and make them find it and it's excellent
super finish from Aki. Well it's funny there are some teams that players love to play against
and Nathan Aki has got a fabulous scoring record against Liverpool he scored for Watford he scored
for Bournemouth now he scored for City against them and City lead by three goals to two.
Liverpool with the ball in the gap for Nunez who is on side he's got goal side he's one on one
he's got oh he's missed it that is a hat trick of really good chances that Darwin Nunez has put
wide and you have to say he should have taken at least one of them and maybe that was the biggest
miss of all or whatever tempo the World Cup was being played at I don't think it was the tempo of
this game this game has been absolutely blistering three two to City with 13 minutes to go Fabinho has
committed a foul Rodri didn't like the challenge the two of them were squaring up Gundogan's pushed
him over and there's five or six players trying to be peacemakers well Fabinho had a nibble
Rodri didn't like it he got up seething and there'll be yellow cards brandished here
there'll be a yellow card for Fabinho and there'll be a yellow card for Rodri and Rodri really is on
the edge tonight you know I've seen it a couple of times in his eyes but he certainly reacted
and I would feel as well as aggrieved because it's just the way he's gone in and just over top
and then tried to antagonize Rodri at the same time but they both get yellow cards
so David Coote saying to Rodri you're being booked for your reaction
and he's saying to Fabinho you're being booked for your challenge
now Marius is on the ball tries to find Foden De Bruyne hits it it's blocked on the line by
Fabinho took up a great position and then Foden hit a shot and Kelleher made the save
and then Foden trips over the ball and it goes out for a goal kick two great efforts from City
one blocked by Fabinho the other saved by Kelleher
a great technique to this left foot from Kevin De Bruyne
just sits in there and it doesn't matter what footage a great instinctive shot and then a slight
good goalkeeping and good defending
